I feel like all the streaming services (excluding Netflix) are in an aggressive battle to create the worst Mac/Safari viewing experience.

"Oh still have 5 minutes to go on your show, better click on this tiny box within 5 seconds or we're going to skip to the next episode."

"You moved your mouse, I assume that means you want the entire video covered with controls and the content dimmed for 30+ seconds.”

@paul the one that gets me is I currently have an entire season of “unwatched” shows because I had the gall to stop watching the show right when the credits started
@paul the experience is even worse on AppleTV. I think I am developing carpal tunnel syndrome in my thumb just trying to get back to the top level menus.

@paul my recent favorite is Apple TV+.

The have a screen that the beginning of episodes saying “Stay tuned for behind the scenes after the episode”. But their auto-play mechanism kicks in several minutes before you get to that, and only gives you about 5 seconds to cancel it otherwise it moves on.

And then you have to go back and now scan through the entire episode you just watched together not only make it past the ~dragon~ auto-play next episode prompt, but then stop just in time to see the behind the scenes before the end of the episode.

@paul I have to assume the big streamers all have big development teams with multiple devs per platform and feature with their own engineering managers and an entire product owner org, but it seems like no one _cares_ _at all_ about the actual user experience. They’re all so rotten and just get worse.
@paul The “next episode or watch credits” selection is bad enough. Even worse is when the whole picture scales down to a little thumbnail and a preview still of whatever is about to play next becomes full screen, pooping all over my attempts to actually read something in the credits of what I just finished watching.
@paul content companies should have no business making video players
@paul you know what doesn't have this problem?
@paul yes in fact the Play button means “show this animated spinning thing indefinitely”.
@paul @Jayenkai HCI/UX classes should be absolutely mandatory for anybody working on a front-end. I’m consistently astonished by how awful modern user experiences commonly are.
@paul It’s definitely not just the web. There are quite a few iPad and Apple TV streaming apps that scream “no one on our team actually uses these devices.”
