Root Cause Analysis of Home Internet Outage 3/4/25

- all connected devices lost internet
- modem and router appeared to be up
- testing showed the basement server running DNS/DHCP was down
- problem determined to be ethernet adapter was disconnected by S'mores the cat chasing one of his toy springs
- oops

@syncros 1. It's not DNS, it's the cat
2. There's no way it's DNS, it's the cat
3. It was DNS, and the cat

@syncros are those springs sold as cat toys? i've not lived with a cat so i have no idea

it looks a lot like a binding spiral, maybe ~18-22mm

@dank haha yeah, cats go nuts for them for some reason. sold in packs of 20 because kitty will immediately lose them under every piece of furniture in the house

@syncros

Those springles are serious business for cats!

@syncros There’s a joke in here involving “cat sics” (“sic” as in “instructing an animal to attack”) but I can’t quite formulate it.
@syncros Last year I experienced "Pumpkin plant unplugging solar panels" as root cause for "why is all power pulled from the grid on a sunny day?".
