Today's fascination: indigenous tactile maps.
These are Inuit and were used when kayaking, feeling them as they paddled along.
The middle one is a representation of a number of offshore islands.

@Mabande fascinating ... I had not thought much about tactile maps but it makes sense, particularly for ocean journeys

@dogtrax Yep, especially when you don't have much room to fold out one of those giant ones ^__^
There's supposedly currents encoded in the carvings too and I'm just like "how?!"

A person I talked about it with on the birdsite said she might be able to scan some photos of similar maps used in New Guinea's rainforests and I really hope she can!
