Listen, I'm not going to pretend that I'm even remotely surprised, but I will tell you that this is a slap in the face to every person in the infosec community that has worked to track and thwart Russian APTs for the last several decades.

Trump administration retreats in fight against Russian cyber threats

Recent incidents indicate US is no longer characterizing Russia as a cybersecurity threat, marking a radical departure: ‘Putin is on the inside now’

The Guardian
I cannot overemphasize how much of playing defense in US corporations, civil society, and government has been about trying to keep the Russians out of your shit.
@evacide but the nickname "cozy bear" sounds so chill and calming.
@evacide in one sense, it's a credit to the blue teamers that Russia decided that the best way to pwn the US government was to buy the presidency, rather than hacking the Gibson.
@womble it's easy to traverse an airgap when your people have the keys to the building
@evacide
@evacide At the end of the Cold War, when all the western countries left the chat, Putin stayed, and he's been fighting ever since. He's now winning.
@evacide might be a good idea to develop tools, best practices etc. against enemies "foreign and domestic"
Exciting but scary times we live in.
@evacide when it comes to corporations, do they target specific sectors of the economy? Or just whomever they can compromise?
@evacide Generals for the past 2 decades have been sounding the alarm that the US needs to be spending 100 times as much on cyber security than we are now. Now even more so. Instead we gave them more abrams tanks that they would ever use and a decade of the F-35 failing to even fly in the rain. This is what we get for leaving our pants down and ignoring our own generals.
@evacide this means Russia was successful…
@evacide
Maybe if we let the vampires into the house, they’ll just disappear…

@evacide sounds more like "shot in the back" …

With a shotgun …

While crouched over a keyboard trying to secure the shit of the bosses of the one holding the shotgun.

How do you get it *out* of the inside?

And do you have a place to organize that with others in infosec in case the rot spreads from the fish head deeper into places with direct control of surveillance?

(and maybe not answer me here, but use that place to band together …)

@evacide POTUS Krasnov is in line for an Order of Saint Andrew the Apostle the First-Called. This has the inscription “За веру и верность” meaning “For faith and loyalty”

@evacide Hi cousin. Am I insane I wonder, for this specific reason not other better reasons to call me insane. I feel like there is a solid chance that one of the five possible futures, so to speak, might be one where the oligarchs take and move to Dubai, or Take over New Zealand, or whatever and leave the US a third-world nation, or balkanized states, in a war torn hellscape. And I already have slots for Nuclear war and The Facist United Christian Kleptocracy insane super pandemic that can be stopped easily but God says no. So we may only have one of five left in which things are better, so let's not screw it up right?, lets take that one in five shot and... Count wrong? Oh no, I didn't mention but obviously counted the one where the asteroid hits us and makes the issue moot, because I don't consider that bad really compared to others, oh did I mention that in the other three futures all have Elon's progeny spread to other worlds?

All in friendly sharing.

And cuz of brain spiders.

@evacide Not just the infosec community, either. There's a lot of folks who've worked in offices off the potomac that have laid down generations of lives & careers holding Moscow at bay.
Examples need be made. Preferably starting imminently with some doge boys receiving discrete visits from a few masked up toof hairies to remind them that playing in the big boi leagues is a contact sport.
@evacide Is there any Europe Infosec org we should be following and funding to pick up the slack?

@evacide

Hopefully Anonymous will step up

@evacide It is actually insane to me what our government is doing right now. At this point, I don't even think we can give the administration the benefit of the doubt that they are *merely* incompetent. The current administration is active, and maliciously, anti-America.

It is actually and seriously their aim to make the united states weaker: to drag down our world-leading economy; to estrange us from our allies and partners; to weaken our capacity to exert international influence through hard and soft power; to destroy the infrastructure that provides essential services protecting the lives, health, and property of the public.
