So, I started to donate for science and education in Ukraine on a monthly basis, https://u24.gov.ua/
canceled Amazon Prime, switched to Ecosia as my browser and search engine, and left a (very minor) role in an advisory committee for a US government program.

(These are just some little steps, but you need to start somewhere)

@hfalcke This sounded good until I read they plant trees. I really hope they are planting the correct trees in the right places, and are not misguided by false classification of savannas and other #TropicalGrassyBiomes as "degraded forests". Planting the wrong trees in the wrong place is a disaster for biodiversity in those places.

#savannasmatter

@scogings we have to assume, they are well aware of that … I knew this as non-expert and I suspect they know as well.
Are there established charities that you would recommend?
@navatintarev.bsky.social There are Initiatives all through Germany, but I don’t have any anything specific. The link above is the government site. One has to hope it is used wisely, but I am willing to take a risk here.
(Perhaps the link got lost in the truncation to Bluesky )
@navatintarev.bsky.social That would be weird. Here it is https://u24.gov.ua

@hfalcke Hmm. I tried to download Ecosia but no Linux, so 👎🏼
@hfalcke
I just switched to Ecosia. I have never heard of that before. Thanks for the suggestion.
@brunthal @hfalcke I don’t understand the benefit of switching to Ecosia. Bing and Google are still used behind the scene.
@jknodlseder @brunthal It is a small step and creates a bit more diversity (and a few trees).

This is correct at the moment, however, they teamed up with #Qwant and some other experts and they will definitely have their own search index in the near future.
