While the techbros are pushing for "just on more datacentre bro", holding on to the ill-conceived idea that #GenAI is going to solve everything, including the #ClimateCollapse crisis their very actions are precipitating, quantum computing is making considerable progress, potentially enabling a breakthrough in the coming years.

As a non-specialist, i have much more faith in quantum computing programmes for research than in "AI". Or am i missing something?

@axx Unfortunately the scalability promises are still wild guesses as I understand it; going from 8 topological qubits to a million is probably far from a done deal (in more understandable areas, think of the scalability promises of Digital Alpha or Intel Pentium 4, and those were a lot further up the scaling chart). As a counterpoint, I found Peter Gutmann‘s https://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut001/pubs/bollocks.pdf an interesting read (at least thought-provoking — I don‘t know whether it’s really accurate or fair either).
@axx Of course if one has zero faith in GenAI techbros then any amount of faith in anything else is a lot more 😜
@skitt Thanks for the thoughtful answer!
@taziden also pointed out that there is already https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Majorana_1#Controversy :D
