@siracusa launches Hyperspace! (That’s not the smell. The app is great.)

Accidental Tech Podcast: 628: There’s a Certain Smell

Three nerds discussing tech, Apple, programming, and loosely related matters.

@atpfm @siracusa I’m a little surprised @siracusa seems to have not played God of War (2018)? Or he would know exactly how to pronounce Jotunheim. With a scottish accent even!

Hyperspace Hard Drive

Handle the hard drive carefully to avoid damaging the circuit board. Make sure you are properly grounded.

Apple's modem group has quite the history.

They were part of Infineon Technologies.

They were sold to Intel in 2015.

In Intel, They released many products, the last being the modem for the iPhone 11 (Pro, Max, etc) and the SE2.

Then Apple bought them in 2019.

So they've been working on modems for more than the last 10 years.

I guess I won't be able to do this with the iPhone 17 Pro (at least, not as cleanly).

Attached: 1 image I find it mildly disappointing that the rumours for the iPhone 17 means any future version of this mashup will need to take more artistic license. Here's the OG iPhone with the iPhone 16 Pro camera bump.

@atpfm

I'd love to know why the wider camera bump wouldn't be used to increase the stereoscopic recording distance between the lenses.

Attached: 1 image if the Vision Pro is successful, I wonder if Apple will make future iPhones better at recording 3D video (aka Spatial Video). Given the shape of the iPhone 15 Pro, Apple certainly has some choices. Spreading the cameras across the width of the device will not reach normal human inter-pupillary distance (maxing out at about 45mm), but would even out the camera bump. Apple could match the average human eyes by extending the camera system down the length of the device. Why not both?

@atpfm re: Gemini and the capacity of your coffee maker, while a standard American cup is 8oz and 12 x 8 = 96, I guess a “standard” coffee cup is 5oz so 12 cups x 5oz = 60oz. And Amazon lists the capacity at 64oz. https://a.co/d/bi6yDZp
@caseyliss Have you checked out Prima Immersive from the Vision Pro App Store? It features an immersive music performance and has even better clarity than Apple's immersive videos.
@atpfm re: Schiit "looking like a swear word in German but isn’t": It would work as a Low German word for 💩. Although I usually see it spelled Schiet, since there is no generally agreed upon orthography in Low German, Schiit would work and be pronounced the same.
@atpfm @marcoarment
The show notes spell it Schitt (instead of Schiit).
Or was that intentional?
@caseyliss @ritchey_de @marcoarment I had a question about this one… why didn’t Marco plug the headphones into the USBPre 2 and get on with it, even if not ideal for routing to speakers and other things? I'm sure there's a reason, but I missed it, at least.

@atpfm You can make a future ATP Overtime—preferably a really juicy one—available for everyone, as an Ad to the membership.

And you should call it ATP Overtime Contingency Protocol

@atpfm @siracusa I can’t see them changing the camera arrangement much for the phones any time soon. They’re all close to each other so that the zoom switching between them is as seamless as possible, and of course the two on the left side (as you look at the back of the phone) are arranged that way for spatial video recording.

@atpfm

@siracusa: “Please rate my app 5 stars or they’ll kill my family.”

@caseyliss: “4 it is.”

Genuinely the funniest thing said on this show, at least that I can remember.

@atpfm when @siracusa was talking about many people in one place with mobile devices i instantly thought about PAX! my kids and i make an offline plan to meet up at specific places and times because we can never count on any data going through (or our batteries lasting long while attempting to send/receive with that congestion)
