The new Mikrotik RDS2216 https://mikrotik.com/product/rds2216 is still breaking my brain. Equipped with 100GbE it's clearly aimed at the enterprise, but I can't help thinking that it's perfect for the mid-market and represents a staggering value prop compared to the existing SSD NAS boxes. A Synology FS2500 with 12 SATA SSD slots goes for ~$3500 vs the RDS2216 full NVMe for ~$2000. 😳

Thinking an “entry level" version replacing the 100GbE ports with more 10/25GbE ports would be a very interesting variant…

Side note: 7mm U.2 drives are getting hard to find.

ROSE Data server (RDS) | MikroTik

RDS is a high-performance, all-in-one storage, 100G networking, and container platform designed for enterprise environments. Featuring 20 U.2 NVMe storage slots and a special RouterOS Edition for Storage & Compute (ROSE).

@erik @normis Looking at the slot disposition for the storage (brochure PDF) maybe you can remove two caddies and slot a 15mm U.2 in the 2nd and 4th slot in each row… 🤞
@ErikBussink @normis That’s what I was thinking/hoping as well. 🤞
We have tested these 7mm drives, maybe it's useful:

Samsung PM9A3
Samsung PM983
Micron 7300 series
Micron 7400 series
WD DC SN640

I slightly doubt that two slots will take a higher drive, but will check and report back tomorrow

@normis @erik when i look at the youtube video of the RDS2216 at 2min46sec the U.2 device is not encroaching on the plastic rails… so a fatter (12.5mm or 15mm U.2) should fit in the even slots.
I will wait for your feedback anyway…

Looking forward to seeing the storage UI of this server.

This is an exciting product 👍

@ErikBussink @normis Oooo ! Massively jealous, but really looking forward to hearing how it works for you.

Given current budgets, it won’t be on my purchase list for at least 6 months ☹️

Very cool! If you have any questions or need assistance, let me and @[email protected] know or email our experts at support at mikrotik . com

And i shall name thee “Treebeard” as you are green & powerfull

All my storage arrays are named after #LOTR characters (aragorn, legolas, gimli, meriadoc, pippin).

@normis I can confirm that its not taking NVMe drivers larger than 7mm.

The NVMe male connector in the slot above would stop it.
