I have conversations with people all the time about this. A common response is that all their information is already leaked all over the place anyway, so why care? My best response has been that even creating one dark spot in an otherwise well lit picture of who you are is a win. And if done enough times, the picture of you created from data will begin to fade.
@jaykass @Em0nM4stodon technically speaking, data is only truly relevant the moment it is collected. The further away in time you get from the collection of your data, statistically speaking, the less relevant the data is if you are trying to apply that data to present or future models. This is particularly true in the case of advertising and/or propoganda, and in moments in time where culture is shifting rapidly. I think they want your present data significantly more than your past data, though of course they want both.
