I’m not feeling heartened by the election results in Germany. Of course it’s good that the AfD didn’t get a majority but it did receive plenty of votes. 1/

@heidilifeldman

My understanding is they did less well than "expected", garnering less than 20%.

It certainly sucks that they got that much, but is that not less than the % of MAGA cult votes on Debacle Day here?

@joeinwynnewood I don’t mean to suggest that the far right has captured as much of the German electorate as Republican Fascism has in the U.S. But this is AfD’s strongest showing ever, and that is scary.

@heidilifeldman

I don't think anyone interested in freedom is anything but horrified at the growth of fascist parties across democracies.

At the same time it's important to clear on their actual size and not make it seem like they are more than they really are.

The danger they represent is very real, and, that danger is being actively opposed by very much a majority of civil society.

@heidilifeldman @joeinwynnewood I think it is particularly troubling because 84 % of the population voted so hardly anyone was apathetic.
@joeinwynnewood @heidilifeldman Media are telling me the Nazis are concentrated in the formerly communist parts of Germany. Perhaps German reunification was a mistake.

@lori @heidilifeldman

I don't know that I'd go that far, but it certainly seems the difficulty of undoing the impact of decades of unrelenting propaganda extoling the virtues of authoritarianism was underestimated.
