Haven't considered this deeply, but I think there's reasons for both choices. As such, I'd consider them both valid and would primarily go with whatever the specific artist says about the nature of their work.

If the artist is commercial, then yes, erotic art is metaphysically and functionally a form of sex work as it is a job in which sexual gratification (in the form of art) is given in exchange for payment. I do not, however, think that erotic artwork should legally be considered a form of prostitution, if for no other reason, because I love a loophole.
