The opposite of DEI is NOT "color-blind, hire-the-best-qualified." It's "continue to hire the incompetent white male just because he's a white male." And the entire Trump administration proves that point.

@petergleick equality and meritocracy she said... as if Navajo girl from reservation has the same opportunities like white boy from Palo Alto ... their ignorance makes me physically sick.

@petergleick
The (sort of) hidden part of their push to destroy DEI is that you should only hire/promote/etc people based on merit, but then defining merit as an intangible quality that, well, white men just have MORE of than anyone else, because reasons.

That's why they absolutely don't think it's possible that someone who isn't a white male was ever hired fairly.

It's kinda strange how it all warps back to eugenics and inherent superiority by assumption.

@Oggie @petergleick

MAGA doesn't want advancement or wealth or power based on "color-blind merit" that's a white power scam; the recently revealed Dallas ICE prosecutor's actual personal X account said "white people should be FAVORED" (without regard to merit).

They destroyed DEI because it worked to guarantee fairness based on merit, not on "favoring" second-rate incompetent white men. And those second-rate incompetent white men are jealous and furious.

@petergleick

yes, if the 3 ladies in the movie Hidden Figures hadn't worked for the space agency, we'd have killed many an astronaut. As an example. Hiring Black people, for instance, is NOT hiring someone unqualified for the job. They KNOW what they are doing and they will do the job well. Firing them or just not hiring them based on the color of their skin is wrong-headed as you may end up hiring a white person who screws up the job. The person hiring should have their job on the line if they hire any unqualified employee. Period. regardless of color or race.

@petergleick

It occurred to me today, that while my workplace doesn't have a DEI policy, it somehow manages to be diverse and inclusive. Basically the hiring policy is to find people with the right skills and who fit in the organisation. A bit of humanity and empathy makes for better retention and more productivity. Basically being decent humans. Amazingly the company still manages to be a market leader. I don't think you can legislate for that.

@petergleick

YUP.

DEI is explicitly an attempt to get to "color-blind, hire-the-best-qualified." Reach out to communities that historically have been excluded from your hiring processes. The people you hire should be representative of the wider community.

As usual, hateful people are inaccurately criticizing others for things they themselves are doing.

"You just want to hire that person because of their skin color and sexual orientation!"

Oh, really?!?! It's an exaggeration to say that everyone in the Trump administration is a cis straight white male - but not **much** of an exaggeration.

@petergleick To be fair he has some pretty incompetent white women as well.
