oh no i went browsing second-hand thinkpads

the 12.5" X270 is so cute

Edit: ooh the X280

Edit 2: X280 is on its way

no thoughts head empty

thats why i need a thinkpad

My first ever computer of my very own was a ThinkPad[1] but I haven't owned another one ever since. I should really fix that.

[1] it had Win 98, even though XP was already out at the time

Edit: fixed that

 second-hand thinkpad ordered

Edit: it's on its way

Now comes the most important part of buying a new device: thinking of what to name it while waiting for it to arrive!

Edit: So it's a really small ThinkPad that I intend to use as a travel laptop. Therefore naming it after a migratory hummingbird would be fitting. It shall be: Eugenes after the Rivoli's hummingbird!

ThonkPad acquired

Yes it's a ThonkPad

The saga so far:

Ordered an X280 1080p 16GB
Received an X280 768p 16GB
Listing was incorrect
Seller has another X280 but that one has 8GB RAM and an ANSI keyboard
They say they'll switch out the displays of the two machines so that I can finally have an X280 1080p 16GB

———
Update:

They did it!

I just received the laptop, I now have a ThinkPad X280 1080p 16GB with an ISO keyboard!

Buying a decent used ThinkPad for 140€ feels really nice

Buying a new 1TB SSD for it for 70€ feels less nice

256GB is too small and 512GB is simply not good value where I looked

Finally, full size arrow keys!
It's been 84 years.

Now, why couldn't they do this for the IdeaPad line?

Speaking of keyboard layouts, Fn and Ctrl are swapped on this ThinkPad compared to my Lenovo Flex

Edit: ah, there's an option in uefi setup to swap Fn and Ctrl!

This is an interesting setting, haven't encountered this before

this thonkpad has crossed many international borders to start its second life

Okay, so this ThinkPad has a MicroSD slot

I'm tempted to use the 1TB SSD I bought for it as an external SSD instead, buy a 256GB for the laptop and keep movies and music on an SD card

a ThonkPad in the night

Holey sheet... So I've had this ThinkPad for a week and I kept experiencing constant micro-freezes of the display of 1-2 seconds, no matter what Linux distro or desktop I tried.

I think I finally found a fix. It's caused by something called Panel Self Refresh. I disabled it with this kernel parameter:
i915.enable_psr=0

It seems to be working well now

All devices have their own quirks. On my other Lenovo laptop I had to specify the BSSID for either the 2.4 or 5GHz wifi signal, otherwise it kept jumping between the two and re-authenticating due to a bug.
I think I've settled on how I want this ThinkPad X280 to be set up. Initially I wanted to do the same as my other laptop; openSUSE with my janky rEFInd config. But then I thought about how I intend to use it as a travel laptop. See, I'm usually not a fan of disk encryption but if I'm going to be taking this machine with me to a lot of places... So I decided to encrypt. Which would be even more janky with rEFInd and I'm not a fan of GRUB so I opted for systemd-boot which is still experimental in openSUSE but seems to work well enough

I'm so touchscreen brained

I keep poking at the display of this ThinkPad expecting things to happen

I did it again with the emoji selector while writing thisss

12.5" ThinkPad with 70% battery vs. 20Ah power bank @ 65W (no I'm not saying 20 000 mAh, that's redundant)
——————
Update: it brought it from 10% up to 90% which is better than what I was expecting!
——————
Intrusive thoughts: but what if you had a 40Ah power bank owo

the invasion of thonkpad by stickers has begun

 by @panda_paco

I can't decide whether I should put the Linux sticker in place of the Intel one like on my other laptop or I should keep the Intel sticker and put the Linux one above it. I don't want three stickers in a row.

Very important implementation detail

Edit: for now I put it above it so I still have the option to change it later

I love my thonkpad
And I love my wallpaper ✨

My verdict:

Why don't consumer laptops have nice matte screens like this??

aah, much BETTERTZ
The urge to put a second SSD into the spare WWAN slot is stro-- wait, it's what key??
This should do the trick, methinks
——————
Edit: ordered
I guess this would also work, provided that I can find a 2230 NVMe that's actually B+M key...

...wow

I found actual 2242 B+M key NVMe
And it's PCIe 3.0 x2 which is exactly what should work in that slot
——————
Edit: also ordered

I have the 2242 B+M NVMe
The moment of truth...
...and it wörk!!

Meaning, that B-key slot is indeed PCIe! Which is apparently not obvious because some laptops use SATA for their WWAN cards...

Now to find a 512GB card that works in there

So... this is supposedly an OEM SSD taken out of a laptop but is technically new. As per the SMART data:

Data Units Read: 308,889 [158 GB]
Data Units Written: 352,301 [180 GB]
Power Cycles: 30
Power On Hours: 3

So what's that 180GB? Factory R/W testing?

As per Reddit, the WWAN slots support:

SATA and PCIe in T470/TP25/X270
only PCIe SSDs in T480/T480s/X280

(mine is X280)

I love my emotional support lapfop

My biggest fear when getting my Framework is still running out of space too fast

@karb I'm taking it slowly
@karb @odoben just put stickers on the inside of the chassis
@spud @karb Alright! I know just the sticker to get for that from @dogo
@odoben I loove My Doguments
@halfy It's from @dogo! There's a whole set of icons.
@odoben needs more Foxbrush

@odoben @panda_paco I love that sticker! :)
@xoagray And there's a matching enamel pin!
But the biggest question is... can you boot from it?!

We'll soon find out whether you can boot from an SSD inserted into the "WWAN" modem slot on a thonkpad x280

Edit: You can!
