Elon Musk’s X blocks links to Signal, the encrypted messaging service
Signal is person to person messaging with groups on the side (ala WhatsApp)
Matrix is groups with person to person on the side (ala Discord)
You use Simplex over Signal for improved privacy and no identifiers, not Matrix.
Signal is still very good though.
It literally is the most secure way to communicate out there, period.
It’s the most secure reasonably popular and user friendly way to communicate. By having unique identifiers and a central server a determined state actor could still figure out who is chatting with whom, and when (but the content of the messages is secure)
There are other protocols out there, like SimpleX or Briar, but they operate on a threat profile way beyond most people need, and they are less intuitive than Signal
It’s more private and secure, and it’s easier to use/recommend.
Matrix stores all metadata, and most all of it makes it’s way to the matrix.org (default instance) server and is subject to dragnet subpoenas. It’s also complicated to use, incredibly slow, and resource-intensive.
