Go back in time and explain to your grandparents that in 2025 the UNITED STATES would be sending its top officials to Europe in support of resurgent Nazi movements aiming to overthrow their democracies.
@gleick What they would say, unfortunately, is "Yes, we've seen this before, we are glad to be gone before we saw it again".

This was ๐Ÿ’ฏ my late fatherโ€™s position before passing in 2022.
@gleick supporting nazis in europe and also neo-soviet russia.
@gleick WWII veterans rolling in their graves
@Lydie @gleick exactly aushwitz survivor spoke about this 'Auschwitz did not fall suddenly from the sky' -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hnwE-5o1-Q

@gleick I'm quite sure they simply would not believe it.
My dad's racist uncle fought in WWII and pretty sure he'd still be pissed.
@gleick Would they be surprised? After all, didn't the Nazis copy some US ethnic cleansing and genocide methods?
@gleick some of those grandparents are still around and the drip drip drip of Fox has fully convinced them into accepting this as good and obviously the right thing to do.

@gleick

We talked about it today. They remember Marshall Aid and will not be able to understand what is happening now. We hardly do it either.

@gleick Oh no! This has never happened before! Nazi officers were never given top positions in NATO. Nope. Not at all. La-la-la-la. I'm not hearing you.

@gleick

Such a shameful appearance... watching in disgust here...

@gleick my family knew of the wildly popular pre WW2 Nazi rallies in the US, so today's events would unlikely surprise them.

@gleick

Remember how everyone keep saying that if they had a timetravel machine they would go back to germany and do what?

Now is the time to act.

@gleick It's not about nazis or democracy. It's about money and power or power an money.
They just don't care at all. Time to step out of our comfortzones and make change happen....be the change you want to see in the world! Stay true to it, in every thought and every second of your life. Not a easy way to walk, but every way can be walked step by step. Just do it ;)
@gleick I'm pretty sure my paternal grandfather would tear me limb from limb if I actually tried to claim such a thing.

@gleick

This reminds me of Allen Dulles running the CIA where he would try to overthrow every leftist government in the world for fear they would join hands with the Soviet Union.

Now, the more sensible policy is to overthrow far right governments for fear they would join hands with America.

@gleick my grandparents lived through WWI and WWII as well. I am not sure they would believe me. They were real FDR Democrats.

@gleick your post is reminding me of my father rebuking my child self for expressing admiration for Lindbergh becuase of his transatlantic flight. he cautioned me to beware of any movement that was "America First", that it was actually Nazi.

our parents and grandparents would not be surprised. but probably plenty disappointed.

@gleick do you mean in 1952, 1954, 1964, 1971, 1973, 1976, โ€ฆ?
@gleick "Oh, they're treating Europe like they've always treated Africa, South America, Central America, and Asia?" You could fill oceans with the blood spilled by the monsters the U.S. has installed and propped up in the name of "business friendly government".
@gleick
Charly did know it already in the 40s .

@gleick My father fought in WWII (he lied about his age and went to Europe at 17).

He would be heartbroken at what's happening now.

@gleick and that the european left will say "ok, they are nazis, but war is bad, so let's wait, maybe the camps are not too bad at all..."
@gleick and saying "your children are the biggest supporters"
@gleick I'm glad my grandfather never lived to see this, and taught me exactly what to look out for. #rollingingraves
@gleick its the talks in Saudi Arabia without eu representation that are the scariest

@gleick Because of a legacy left by a President whose portrait hung on their wallS from 1982 until my mom took them down?

Yeah, no. You can have that fight if you want it.

@gleick

Reminder: Winston Churchill was worried which side USA would be on, when they eventually bothered to turn up to WW2. They chose the side that would pay the most, of course.

"The debt was to be paid off in 50 annual repayments commencing in 1950. Some of these loans were only paid off in the early 21st century. On 31 December 2006, Britain made a final payments of about $83m (ยฃ45.5m) to the US and about $23.6m to Canada." - Wikipedia

@gleick

To our fathers who were drafted right out of high school into the war.

@gleick - the grandparents already witnessed this in their time - in the 1930's in the USA there was a movement with significant numbers and some celebrity members (such as Charles Lindbergh) sympathetic to fascists, white supremacists and Nazis, as well as a movement of foreign policy isolationists. There was even a sold out rally of US Nazi sympathizers that occurred at Madison Square Garden in 1939. Luckily these people were in the minority rather than the majority at the time.

@TotalSonic @gleick

henry ford, former ambassador Joseph Kennedy...

Had Germany not declared war on the US, the US would have left europe to burn.

@gleick My dad was a Nazi victim. Not the camps, I'm happy to say. Those were the final solution, but one of the initial solutions was to run all Jews in culturally significant positions out of Germany, and he was an apprentice conductor at the Mannheim Opera. So about a month after Hitler became Chancellor, the brownshirts settled for escorting him to the train station at gunpoint and putting him on a train to Paris. I can't tell you how happy I am that he died before he could see what's happening now, both in America (MAGA) and Germany (the AfD).
