Today the vice-president of the United States stated publicly that Germany's government should work more closely with a proven right-wing extremist party, one week ahead of a federal election, for risk of ignoring the people's will. What a historic disappointment, seeing this tone-deafness.
@jezdez It's such a dark time here in America. I hope our leaders prove to be impotent in meddling in other countries' elections. I love what Germany has become and I'd hate to see the far right gain any sort of foothold in your country.
@sebleier I can say the response so far bodes well, but whether that will be lasting? Who knows. Nothing seems impossible now though, after this radical change of US position on European peace. Lots of reminders of German-American Nazi history come to mind.
@jezdez You're absolutely right, veins of fascism run through most cultures, including here in the US. The Nazi rally at Madison Square Garden in 1939 is one stark reminder, but over the last 10 years it's been increasingly and uncomfortably prevalent in our modern culture. It's truly sickening, but I hope our overall decency will stem the rise of this tide.
