It's only "moderate" in that they are less than three standard deviations below the median in terms of weight-for-height, but who can visualise that?

Get a ruler.
Measure out 3.7 cm.
If their biceps (!) is any thicker than that, they suffer only "moderate" acute malnutrition.*
