"You received this email because you subscribed to emails from 1Password about resources and security advice."

what the crap, #1Password ?

a) why is my trusted password manager cooperating with a speculative company built on selling stimulants?
b) how is this "Resources and security advice"?

@kfh Hey Karl! I hear you on this, and you’re right - this email wasn’t part of our usual security updates. The intent was to share a milestone we’re excited about, but I get that it didn’t feel relevant under the category of “resources and security advice.”

If you’d prefer to skip emails like these in the future, you can always adjust your email preferences at the link below. Either way, I appreciate the feedback and will take it back to the team.

@blake @kfh I think you entirely missed the first, longer, more serious point, so I’ll split it into several.

Why is 1password in the same sentence as Oracle?

Why is 1password partnered with an energy drink company?

Does 1password support Larry Elison’s fascist beliefs?

Did anybody think “Should we REALLY partner in any way with Oracle, whose executive chairman sat on a phone call discussing ways to overturn democracy?” before deciding this was a good idea?

Hey @blake and thanks for reaching out!

Firstly, I really appreciate that 1PW is present on Mastodon!

Secondly, your product is am really good! I like your security model, and find it great to use across platforms. I first got familiar with it through work, and I liked it so much that I started subscribing to 1PW Family, to get my family to use it as well.

Thirdly, expanding on my criticism--

1/4

1PW has a somewhat special role in organizations' and the users' lives. It holds the keys to the kingdom, guarding the access to an organization's secrets and people's lives. As users, we put an immense amount of trust in the software and the safeguards that cover it.

Right now, 1PW (and AgileBits Inc.) exist within the jurisdiction of a political reality where executive overreach daily makes international headlines. This puts particular responsibility upon 1PW to retain safeguards.

2/4 @blake

When 1PW start cooperating with companies that are built around pushing energy drinks, or companies that envision a totalitarian surveillance state[0], I get really worried. Oracle's vision is completely antithesis to 1PW's mission and what users expect from the software and company.

I have serious issues trusting a platform of secrets when it has proximity to Oracle -- even if it's through something as unrelated as a sponsored racing team.

Billionaire Larry Ellison says a vast AI-fueled surveillance system can ensure 'citizens will be on their best behavior'

Billionaire Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison said he expects AI surveillance systems to reach a point where all citizens are under constant watch.

What I would expect from #1Password is independence.

Independence from external commercial interests and extracurricular activity.

I would expect opposition to governmental and corporate influence. Visible and clear messaging about safeguarding. Statements opposing any use of backdoors, crypto compromises or other attacks on the users' privacy.

Take a page out of @Mer__edith 's playbook - don't stay in jursidictions that want to break the seal.

Be loud. Be clear. Be secure.

4/4 @blake

@kfh @blake That’s exactly what I wanted to say, in a more eloquent manner.
@kfh It's the Ryan Reynolds bucks.

@kfh FYI, the Red Bull Racing team will also (yet again) be sponsored by a crypto company, in addition to AgileBits and title sponsor Oracle.
