@anubiarts I always like reading about people's initial and post experiences with a distro that just works for them and their hardware. I was in a similar situation at first, however, Ubuntu had since fixed that diabolical boot issue...
Mint, is based on Ubuntu (without the changes they didn't like, ex: Snaps, they use Flatpak by default).
I'm currently using Fedora GNOME myself, but, I do agree that Fedora is a really stable distro like Mint. The knowledge gap between using an Ubuntu based distro and Fedora isn't overly high! It means using Fedora is relatively easy to do and won't require too much work from you.
As the Flathub is a graphical solution which makes using the terminal in most cases an option, instead of a necessity! Unless, of course, you need something that is only in an RPM in a previous version of Fedora (that will still work with the most current version of Fedora).
@WanderingInDigitalWorlds ohh, I'm glad that boot issue was fixed
now that I know more of Linux I thought I messed up the install, but I guess not
that one I knew beforehand, as that friend told me about it
though I also thought they wanted to see .deb(s) thrive, considering the underhood changes done in 22.1
yeah that's true! though installing codecs separately was weird haha
ever since I've switched to Fedora, I've been using far more flatpaks in comparison to how I did in Mint yeah (with the exception of Steam, as the flatpak version can cause issues in-game, so I had to install it via terminal)
they're both great distros
@anubiarts Yeah, unfortunately, Linux distros will have an issue come back up time and time again...Like failed boots, as there are so many factors which could contribute to one. I could see why you'd believe you messed up the installation.
Linux Mint devs certainly wants .debs continue to be a viable thing, whereas, Canonical wants Snaps to be fetch going forward and gradually switch over to them entirely (as they did propose and develop the packaging format).
Fedora is a strange one for not wanting to mix free and non-free; as a lot of people are going to use the non-free repositories as they offer superior drivers for hardware support. Free codecs failed to load the visual elements of videos, but the audio was preserved, and it was necessary that I use the non-free codecs.
Personally, I haven't had any issues using the Flatpak version of Steam on Fedora, most issues I seem to note are those with games in early access not post 1.0 titles.
I used Ubuntu more than Mint, I did enjoy that distro quite a bit (despite some leadership issues) as they understood the necessity of including non-free codecs and drivers to make the user experience good right out of the box.
However, I do agree that Fedora is a rock solid rolling release; Ubuntu and Mint are also amazing because of their LTS versions. I always am cautious of Canonical's testing and in-between LTS releases though.
@anubiarts > A few days ago I decided to do my first distrohop to Fedora (with the KDE Spin), because I wanted to give KDE Plasma and Wayland a try
One thing I wish I knew going into linux was that trying new desktops does not require distro hopping. You can install multiple and any desktops/window manager on a single linux installation. I've got KDE, fluxbox, and dwm :)
