Fuck Substack. Just blog.
@Daojoan I know, it's so disappointing to see someone on Substack.

@Daojoan

Person: Fine. *Creates a blog on Wordpress*

Mastodon: No! Not like that!

@veedems
While not what i would choose, is there anything particularly wrong with WP?
@bezorp the CEO has been a bit of a dope lately in the way he’s handled the WPEngine situation
@Daojoan while I agree, what do you think the best alternatives are? Medium? Wordpress? I try to encourage my students each class to create an online platform to feature their writing. Sometimes it’s substack, but mostly it’s always been medium.
@delgulliver @Daojoan Dreamwidth still exists. Just saying.

@delgulliver @Daojoan

~~forcing students into surveillance situations should be illegal.~~ (edit: that's not a comment on your practice or actions, I'm sorry, in retrospect, it wasn't meant like that, I'm sure your intentions are nothing but good)

these are alternatives - some of them challenge students to learn a bit of underlaying technology like html and ssh-ing to a linux server:

Create and surf awesome websites for free.

@delgulliver Honestly wherever they're comfortable flexing and getting started for the most part BUT make sure it's somewhere they can easily migrate off.
@delgulliver
I've been seeing good things coming from obsidian.md, though haven't published anything through it myself yet.

@Daojoan titles of some selected blog posts by me:

Start of a new weblog

New software

Other blogging software, again

New Blogging Software

New year, new software

@Daojoan I don't subscribe to Substack, and my respect for people who write there drops several notches.
@Daojoan I find everyone putting their hand out for donations annoying. I have a blog which I have not kept up with, but really not all that much into writing anymore.
@Daojoan 100%, but they love that platform
@Daojoan I love ("love") that the first time I ever heard about Substack was learning that they were literally paying TERFs and alt-righters to blog on their platform, and now everyone is using it.
@Daojoan for many setting up a domain and website is not trivial. Do you have any alternative services you’d recommend?
@Daojoan After recently trying to deal with substack as a consumer, I couldn't agree more.
@Daojoan I used to follow blogs on blogger, but I don't know, been a while since I used it
