Reminder that you can criticize bad people by just pointing out that they did something shitty and leave it at that

You extremely don't need to go on to make fun of their physical appearance, sexuality, gender identity, or imply that they are mentally ill or disabled

And in fact if you do it weakens the point you're trying to make and also alienates people who might otherwise be your ally

@researchfairy
God I am so sick of this person look how ugly they are as the primary attack vector.

@researchfairy it's the sort of thing that makes me question the origin of the criticism itself

(if it happens from a group enough times it makes me wonder if they had some other motivation in mind)

either way, if they're bad, just say that and how, it's not that difficult!

@researchfairy
Even better, tell them how their actions made YOU feel... No one can argue how it made YOU feel... If that person cares about you, it will hit harder... If the person does not care about you, you should not care about said person!
@researchfairy I'd like to "yes and" this with also not calling everyone who is not already where you are at some kind of insulting/ablest slur. No one hears themselves called a slur and thinks, "I wonder what other amazing gems that person has to offer me?"
@baconandcoconut Sorry, not sure I understood your post
@researchfairy I'm thinking about people saying. "Only r*tards don't agree with me" or "You'd have to be cr*zy not to want to XYZ right now" or even "You're probably too brainwashed/stupid to get this but..." as a strategy to get people to join their movement.

@baconandcoconut
YES AND...

Despite the monsters at the top succeeding on their shamelessness, trying to shame their followers is mostly just not going to work. We can't tolerate the harm, but we do need to be as graceful and generous as we can to bring people back.

It's not fair, it's not "just", but life's not fair, and we can chose to do what works or what doesn't.

That said.... we're only human, so we'llfail to overcome our instincts and gottaforgive oursrlves and each other and try again next time. And the folks who have recieved the most harm need to our compassion more urgently.

Thanks for coming to my lecture. πŸ˜…
@researchfairy

@researchfairy we can address whiteness though. That has much less to do with physical appearance, than it has to do with violent behavior from an entire culture of ppl. I do know white leftists don’t really like to hear about their whiteness, in my experience.
@researchfairy also comparing them to children in any capacity, ageism is bad and children aren't more cruel or malicious than adults, quite the opposite.

@researchfairy Several years ago, the premier of Alberta said she wouldn't block anyone on twitter unless they called her "The B-word or the C-word."

Of course she broke her word because she's an evil lying fascist, but she was (shockingly!) right: I could fight my opponents - political or otherwise - without resorting to slurs.

So this is me thanking Danielle Smith - a lying psychopath - for elevating my online discourse beyond name-calling.

@researchfairy
Body shaming, also popular on mastodon. Unfortunately. 🍁
