During regime change, the first people to go are the scholars.

Qin Shi Huang (QSH - the China's first emperor) did it. He "united" the nation by basically defeating 6 other countries, annexed them, and killed a whole bunch of Confucian scholars.

When Mao took over, he had boasted about killing off 40,000 scholars.

Scholars are pesky people who teach young people independent thought, ethics, and decision making. All very annoying skills when you are going around destroying everything that people previously stood for.

You will notice that Republican states have been gutting education funding for years. Here in Canada, every time the cons get into power, education funding goes down yet again.

It's essentially the same thing. DeSantos is going after scholars hard in Florida. Rump has declared war on the media and education will surely be soon to follow, if it hasn't already. This is universal. It happened in China (many many times), Nigeria, Ghana... (just to name a few). Scholars get purged.
Do not count on your tenured status to save you. That will be meaningless soon.

If you want to flee, that's probably the safest, if you have somewhere to go. If you are committed to staying to fight the fight, I can't say I have much advice beyond I wish you strength of whatever God you have chosen. And I hope you have good strong networks of people around you. People like you will be needed.

Remember that the academic class is anything but apolitical. Educating the future to be great minds is antithetical to the needs of fascist regimes.
