Democrats are, with a few exceptions, clueless and cowardly about what Josh Marshall calls "the gravity of the situation" we're in right now.

So is Big Journalism. Never have we needed news organizations to recognize the emergency -- part of which is the harshest attack in our lifetimes on their vital role -- and then realize that activism, not pathetic business as usual, has never been more needed.

A Few Thoughts on Messages and Morale

@dangillmor

They're not clueless.

They're complicit.

@dangillmor All of the weaknesses of political press we've seen over the past 8 years are converging at the worst possible moment.

@dangillmor

Republican.voters are a bunch of dumb f***s. I don't think anything will get better until they suffer enough to overcome their stupidity. And that is a lot of suffering for all of us.

You can lecture democrats. You can tell them to say this or do that but it doesn't matter. The dumb f-ers voted the way they did and this is all their fault.

@dangillmor "Big Journalism" is not the same as a Free Press. They've all been bought. I no longer consider them reliable sources of factual information.

@dangillmor

3/4 of the party are more than happy to slip into the role of "systemic opposition" as long as it keeps their donors happy.

@dangillmor I am suspecting that they are scared. Scared to be sent to Guantanamo or to just disappear.

@dangillmor

Operator: 911 what is your emergency?

Caller: A man is stabbing me repeatedly and aggressively with a screwdriver.

O: That sounds like a lot, perhaps his arm will get tired.

C: Can you send the police?

O: Don't worry, god is on the throne. Have you tried engaging him on an issue you both agree on?

C: Do something

O: I'm afraid we're a bit discombobulated over here because of how quickly the situation developed. We're formulating a response. Call back tomorrow

C: Hnng

@dangillmor Unfortunately, "Big journalism" absolutely has some people who aren't clueless about the gravity of the situation. And some of them aren't cowards either, they're enthusiastic.

Journalism in the US is far more deeply broken at this point than just "they are clueless and we just need to explain to them."

@dangillmor American journalism has been showing its weaknesses for years now but I have been pleasantly surprised by the Atlantic recently.

How Hitler Dismantled a Democracy in 53 Days

He used the constitution to shatter the constitution.

"Churchill had a clear message: 1) We’re never going to give up. Literally, never. 2) We’re going to battle back with these tools. And 3) Finally, we’re going to win.

In other words, a path back — even over the obstacles of uncertainty, odds and maybe even logic... And we’re really not hearing that yet from #Democratic leaders in Washington. And the truth is, the odds are wildly better for them than they were for the British in the Fall of 1940."

There are none so blind as those who do not wish to see.

They are terrified that if they admit it, they'll have to do something about it. They, with few exceptions, signed up to be nothing more than doomed moral victors who could throw up their hands and say "well, we tried" and then sit back as the lobbying bribes rolled in. A cushy no-show job for life.
