"I want to speak directly to Americans," says Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. "This is a choice that will harm Canadians...but will have real consequences for you."
President Trump's imposition of tariffs violates the free trade agreement they both signed, says the Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau.
Better path for President Trump to usher in a Golden Age for America is "to partner with Canada, not punish us," suggests Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau.
White House actions "split us apart instead of bringing us together," says Prime Minister Trudeau, announcing Canada is responding 25% tariffs on $155 billion worth of American goods.
Canadian tariffs on US products will include bourbon, beer, vegetables, perfume, clothing and shoes, announces Prime Minister Trudeau.
Canada and Mexico "working together to face these tariffs," adds Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau.
Prime Minister Trudeau asks Canadians to stay united and support those who will be going through "tough times" as a result of the tariffs imposed on Canada by US President Trump.
"We prefer to solve our differences by diplomacy, but are prepared to fight if it's required," says Canadian Prime Minister after US imposes 25% tariffs.
President Trump has not taken the Canadian prime minister's phone calls since the inauguration, but Justin Trudeau responds to reporters that "I hope to speak with him sometime soon."
Americans need Canada's natural gas, oil, minerals, automotive parts, cement and soft lumber and the 25% tariffs will hurt Americans, predicts Prime Minister Trudeau. "We will use all the tools at our disposal. ...The Americans have placed us in this situation."
"Canadian are a little bit perplexed why our closest friends and neighbors are targeting us," says Prime Minister Trudeau. "We have the most successful partnership the world has ever seen."
President Trump "is fully aware of my position," says Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau.
"I think Canadians understand we need to respond to this" in a way that is "measured but forceful," says Prime Minister Trudeau. "We are certainly not looking to escalate."
"The coming weeks will be difficult for Canadians and will be difficult for Americans," adds Prime Minister Trudeau. There'll be "real consequences for people, for workers on both sides of the border."
@w7voa and the tariffs against EU countries are coming in 3-2-1. Let’s embrace for impact, but he is pulling on the shorter side of rope, together stronger. EU should strengthen the ties with Canada and Mexico.
@w7voa sigh.. I wonder which province will the first one annexed by America to seize its natural resources?🤔
@w7voa oops. Measured responses will only bring about slower retaliation. Too bad Trudeau hasn't been paying attention to how this has played out over the last 8 years

@w7voa

Waiting for the juvenile bullying to erupt on TechBro social media

@w7voa there he goes being like dems in the US congress. If Canadians are perplexed perhaps he should tell them why. It’s not like the US president hasn’t been saying he’s going to do this for a minute now.

@daedalean @w7voa people have been of the the mind of oh you he won't actually do it.

Trump had people who told him to piss off first term. Republicans are just going to roll over for him unless red state voters start getting their knives out

@Jam123 @w7voa one thing he learned from his first term is that he has to get rid of anybody who can tell him no. And his lackeys are working on that furiously.
@daedalean @w7voa We’re not perplexed. We’re fucking angry.
@RandomCanuck @w7voa and your politicians shouldn’t say you are.
@daedalean @w7voa He’s just being diplomatic. Unlike 47, our PM isn't one to casually burn a friendship down.
@RandomCanuck @w7voa he’s being diplomatic to trump. Most of our democrats in congress are trying to play the same game. Diplomacy will not work with trump. With him you have to play a different game.
@RandomCanuck @w7voa just look at where diplomacy got Europe with hitler if you have doubts. The US is currently a pariah state.
@daedalean @w7voa Chamberlain was weak and readily fooled by Hitler. We’re not fooled by 47. The US is an empire in decline and has become a pariah state through moral and ethical decay. Now, the whole world is going to have to deal with the US electorate’s intransigence.
@RandomCanuck @w7voa you think chamberlain was the only one? He was not. And I certainly hope they are not fooled. They have incentives to be fooled. Dealing with the US intransigence is not gonna be easy. They aren’t going to want to.
@daedalean @w7voa You can have an iron hand in a velvet glove. We’ll not be bullied. We’d rather discuss a common solution than get into a fight.
Those words weren't to trump, but to all Americans. What are you going to do about it?
@daedalean @RandomCanuck @w7voa
@osma @RandomCanuck @w7voa those of us who oppose him are trying. We have many people, cities and states doing their best to block the ICE round ups, some state governors and AGs suing (successfully even) to stop his actions. But on the tariff thing trump is (stupidly, disingenuously, and recklessly) acting within his authority.
@osma @RandomCanuck @w7voa My hope is that this hurts enough of the gop donor class to get the legislators they own in his party to join the democrats in passing laws to limit his authority over tariffs. But there’s no guarantee our SCOTUS won’t reject that even if it does happen.
@osma @RandomCanuck @w7voa We have no mechanism to call for new elections before 2026. We have mechanisms to remove him from office but those won’t be used because the gop controls them. If the republic collapses then so does any constitutional authority that legitimates him but that will not actually improve your situation, quite the opposite.
@osma @RandomCanuck @w7voa We had to not elect him and we did so we’re basically fucked. Y’all should be seeking reliable trade partners elsewhere. A large minority of my fellow citizens want this. Some may not understand what it is but they want it.

@daedalean @RandomCanuck @w7voa Stand up to trump for the bully he is or get rolled by him. He has started a multi-front trade war so he's not smart to start with. If Canada and Mexico were smart, they'd conspire on tariffs to crash American economies as quickly as possible. Targeting trump supporters in Congress if possible.

Nothing erodes support faster than realizing the guy you put in is crashing YOUR stuff

@w7voa
Reporters. Are you just reporting what Trump or his spokespeople say, or are you reporting what is actually happening? If the former, you're just repeating government propaganda.

@w7voa

...that would be why....

@w7voa

Best thing I've seen on TV since. . . 1/20

@w7voa

Those affected by tariffs should make a free trade agreement.

Canada, Mexico, China, ...

@georgengelmann @w7voa This may or may not be the path of Canada and/or Mexico, but rest assured that China is reaping even bigger gains in Latin and South America because of Trump. I don’t know about the Caribbean nations, but any functioning human mind will see that Trump is pushing and ushering America’s neighbors into China’s open arms.
I certainly hope that Canada, Mexico and Europe are having close talks about how to respond to a hostile USA.
