The reason I went to law school and became an attorney was because one evening I was with my friend, who is Greek.

We were pulled over, violently pulled from the car (including my girlfriend), we were thrown up against the car and wall, intrusively searched (including my girlfriend's purse and the car trunk).

The only reason that the cops gave was that my friend "looked Mexican".

ICE is the American Stasi, the American Gestapo. Any officer who participates is not an American, he should be ashamed.

@karlauerbach The punchline is that the USA has millions of Mexicans whose family's presence in the region predates the existence of the USA.

@karlauerbach

You would fail my law classes on logic. Despite your personal experience, you're not even trying to defend a client you know is guilty. Reality is simply the opposite.

@karlauerbach Every last ICE employee, no matter their position or rank, is a fucking traitor.
@karlauerbach what an origin story! I’m sure this is becoming more and more an issue in Phoenix AZ.

@karlauerbach

Standard everyday procedure in Portland during the protests everytime they spotted a POC or heard other than english. Sorry you had to go through that.

@karlauerbach

There’s an org, AHEPA, that was founded in the 1920s South as an explicitly anti-Klan org because Greek immigrants were being harassed and threatened for the offence of serving all as equals.

I think it’s long past time for that group to go back to its roots.

@karlauerbach I'm sure you'll hear this from others and I really feel the anger you express as well, but the problem we're facing is that those officers *are* Americans. Things are going to get really, really bad. I'm hearing this from my friends still in the civil service and I believe it myself, thankful to have retired already. Everyone who didn't vote for this is as upset and horrified as we knew we'd be. The question is what, if anything, will it take for the same sense to dawn on the people who voted for this with malicious glee.

@karlauerbach

Sue for unlawful detention.

@BuckRogers1965 Indeed that traffic stop and search were illegal. However it happened in 1972 or 1973 (I started law school in 1974.)

Wow, that's more than 50 years ago!

@karlauerbach ah, this is horrible. You have my sympathies for you and your friend.

On another note, I always wondered how I would be treated in the US since I consider myself white. Well, I'm Mediterranean and look like many Greeks and Egyptians and Italians. I have also been told I look Mexican and Colombian by Mexicans and Colombians. Hearing this story, I now know that if I ever had to go to the US, I need to be EXTREMELY careful of the cops

@engravecavedave In the 1960's film "Zorba the Greek", the lead role was played by a man from Mexico.
@karlauerbach oh I know that Mediterraneans and Latin American people look similar and can be mistaken for one another. It was a case of me specifically because I was always paler than eveyone around me and well ... US racial dymanics are different from the ones in Europe. So I always wondered
@karlauerbach These officers *ARE* American. Claiming that they are not lets us distance ourselves from them. Violence and xenophobia are part and parcel of the rotten core that is this country.

@savanni People who engage in Stasi/Gestapo tactics, voluntarily and for pay, may be US citizens, just as those in the Stasi and Gestapo were German citizens.

But they are acting contrary to both American principals and our Constitutional limitations.

I guess that one could accurately that they are as American as the KKK.
