A long time ago (Well, not that long) I was getting back into ham radio. I walked into my local ham radio club and instantly noticed something. Where were all the 15 and 17 year olds? The room looked full of old folks (I resemble that remark too but...)
I know the younger hams are out there but they sure don't feel comfortable in our clubs.

@va3db I've been to a couple club meetings, and even in my mid 30s I still feel like I'm half the age of the other members.

There's definitely some young hams out there, but I don't think a room full of grumpy seniors citizens is the environment you'll find them in.

@va3db I'm 57 and I'm still younger than most people in my club. We have some youngsters come through sometimes, and they may come to a handful of meetings and then disappear. They tend to be prepper SHTF types who work only digital modes.
@arth ugh preppers. I was prez of a local club and received a phone call from someone who wanted to get a licence so they could get free email on their boat. I was not impressed.

@va3db I'm in my mid thirties.... And haven't been back to my local club since the second time I went.

It's one thing to be predominantly older white males.

It's another thing entirely when I'm the only person under 50 and listen to literal hate speech in the normal course of a meeting.

Sigh.

@b4ux1t3 Ugh. It has not been that bad here in Ottawa Canada but even here I guess there are a few. Fortunately not too bad in the local club. (Which I left for other reasons)

@va3db

One of the last ham clubs I attended, first time I went, the old timers were having a disgusting conversation about alligators eating babies.

The last time I went, the same old guys spent the entire meeting talking endlessly about guns.

It's not appealing.

@murodegrizeco And... one of the local clubs (not going to name them) had a guy who creeped on me. I never went back.

@va3db

I am sorry, that is awful and wrong.
