If you're feeling like the world is falling apart around you and that there's nothing that you can do to make things better...

Volunteer.

Find a food bank, a shelter, a hospice, a senior center. Find some place where you can lend your time towards the service of others.

Volunteering is a great way to do something worthwhile for your community. It takes us out of our own troubles, and focuses that energy on helping others.

So go volunteer. Help yourself by helping others.

@Mrfunkedude I hear this a lot and I generally believe it's true. That said, I was raised in a cult where I was voluntold to give thousands of hours of “service” that was mostly to benefit the organization and to keep us busy so we wouldn't question. To refuse was to be shunned and shamed.

To this day, I've been largely unable to even think about volunteerism without a surge of anxiety and repulsion. Maybe I'll get around it someday.

To the sincere volunteers, you have my respect.
