@codinghorror we see this all the time in Italy when a right wing government gets elected, national broadcasting does something like censoring some comedian or journalist within a week since they take power and usually the government has to actually come out and say "look, we didn't ask for this".

The expression commonly used is "more royalist than the king". People are eager to comply when they think it'll be useful (or not damaging) to them.
