Bill Burr calls out insurance companies over LA fires—"Free Luigi!" - Lemmy.World

Lemmy

Sometimes I’m not sure if I’m a Bill Burr fan, but then he does shit like this and I go all Gaga for him.
His comedy is pretty good. Not so much his old stuff but his newer stuff is amazing. Like his comedy or not, he’s always had a “fuck you” attitude about this kinda stuff which is why I respect him so much. The only comedian I know that calls shit like it is and calls out other people on their bullshit without having some kind of agenda, is trying to sell something, or trying to be political. He’s like the voice in the back of my head when I’m pissed off at something incarnate.

I followed him back on O&A and watched his small bits to his Breaking Bad stuff and everything… seen him like 5 times live. I love his body of work … old to new.

His “fuck you” attitude is one that makes me wish I’d have a friend like Bill calling my ass out. I love it.

His roles on The Mandalorian and Reservation Dogs were both very different and very good. On the Mandalorian he plays a former soldier who is basically Bill Burr in space. On Reservation Dogs he plays a high school basketball coach with a troubled daughter.
Yeah, feels like he is walking in Carlin’s foot steps but with his own cadence.
Capital-G Gaga? Like you put on a meat dress or something?
Clearly my keyboard thought so.
Are meat dresses made out of skirt steak?
A bad romance, you could say.
He’s definitely a bit of an asshole, but at the end of the day, from what I’ve seen from him over the years he does have his head on straight on a LOT of issues.
He’s like my inner angry voice when I’m pissed off at something but as a person.
I don’t even think he’s an asshole, honestly. He just has no filter against stupidity.
Tbh that’s probably a big part of why I think his head on straight, because I’m kinda the same way in that regard
And the fact he can’t get away with it is what I love about the guy. He isn’t afraid to confront the hard truths we all are thinking.
Hard agree. I used to think he was just strictly a dick, but his introspection and growth shows he’s really honestly been thinking about things with as much empathy as he can muster.
That’s a good point I think but I’d argue that’s kinda a recipe for an asshole. Especially if you think you’re always right and everyone else is stupid. Not that I think that’s really the case with burr (I mean he can definitely be a bit of an ass sometimes but who isn’t) and I don’t have much of a problem with him at all but I think you’re description kinda only makes a person conditionally not an asshole 😄
Is he though? I can’t think of any takes from him that I haven’t liked.
He’s definitely gone into territory that I think some people find “offensive”, but I personally find to just be blunt. Maybe it’s the old school Bostonian vibe, which I understand as a Bostonian, and some people not from the region don’t necessarily.
So? People get so hung up on their right to remain unoffended. That’s not reality - it’s hiding. Our collective thin skin is getting shredded.
Seriously I think it’s possibly a psy-op to make the left weaker in North America. Or at least to make leftists seem weak. At any rate it’s working, look at what’s happening to our political landscape as a result.

I mean, that doesn’t feel farfetched.

By the way, my friend had a hardcore band called “Crucifux” in Tampa Bay, FL area about 15 years ago. Your handle made me double-take.

Haha I know. I love hardcore, and found out about them from googling my own gamer tag when I was like 17
Hilarious. I played music with the drummer, Andy. Small world.
Speaking of names, I have the eye from Obituary’s album Cause of Death incorporated on the sleeve tattoo on my right arm.
For every American who gets offended at someone from Boston there’s a Canadian that isn’t a thin-skinned little bitch. ;) (okay maybe not a perfect metaphor but after the day I’ve had I’m not workshopping this one)
He's actually a really good example of how to do shock humor without being a bigot. He doesn't really punch down, and if he's doing like race jokes, it's usually through the lens of "look at how stupid this racist mfer is."
I do not care for him using homophobic and ableist words as insults, but he’s from Boston so it doesn’t surprise me that he does. Other than that, he seems like a decent guy.
What homophobic and ableist words does he use? I’m trying to think of times when he said one and nothing is coming to mind.

The one that starts with F and the one that starts with R. The famous rant that he had where he heckled all of Philadelphia is a very good example.

It’s a very funny rant, but that part does not make me feel very good to hear.

Was pretty normal for the times. Back when I was a kid people used them as their go to insults. Like everyone I knew. I haven’t heard him say those slurs recently. Times change, people grow.
“For the times?” That happened in 2006. Times had changed long before that.
Maybe it’s growing up in a small town in Alberta and being a teenager back then, but the world has progressed a LOT in the last 20 years. Much for the better, but to pretend that it hadn’t is disingenuous man. Ask any lgbt+ person in their thirties or older if you don’t believe me.
He’s essentially as close to Carlin as we’re likely to see.
Shhh, that’s what people were saying about Dave Chappelle before, you know, all the stuff he’s said recently about trans people
I assure you no one was saying that about Dave Chappelle. That dude has always been a racist jackass. He just happened to be funny for a short while.

Dave is an absolutely world class comedian, but I believe (and I’m pretty sure most of Lemmy would agree) his personal politics are trash.

Bill Burr is also a world class comedian, but I like most of his personal politics.

The problem is that unlike writing, music and movies unless you are on stage doing a “character” your personal politics IS your act and its very hard to separate the art and the artist.

I honestly thought Louis CK was going to take up the Carlin mantle. But instead he invited people up to his hotel room to watch him wank onto a mantle.
From what we know so far, Bill Burr is in a stable relationship and is a good parent. I want to believe that’s true.
Even if they didn’t know it.

I assure you people did say that, particularly on Reddit, after his 8:46 set. Just because you don’t like him doesn’t mean he wasn’t pretty popular at one time. The Chappelle Show could have kept going, it had strong viewership. When Dave returned to comedy after his hiatus he was mostly liked. And when he did his 8:46 set about George Floyd, his popularity hit an all-time high with everyone but the alt-right.

You’re not wrong about him being a jackass, and I would say bigoted more than racist, since his hate is broader than racism. But yes, people did laude him, for a brief time

Honestly the most annoying thing about the trans people shit is he just goes on and ON about it, and his jokes about it aren’t even that funny if you’re trying to look at it from a bigoted perspective. Like it’s not good material. It’s BORING dude. Why do like two whole specials where half of the time is you talking about it.
There’s also Josh Johnson.
Jack Johnson’s brother?
No idea who Jack is, but Josh is a stand-up comedian who has been releasing a new hour of topical material on a near weekly basis for the last few years.
lol jack Johnson from early 2000 music, curious George soundtrack.
I was already uncool by then.

Bill Burr on People Online Commenting on the LA Fires & Getting in Touch with His Emotions

He was going off about CEOs being the new mafia, just mafia supported by the law this time around. And speculating on whacking between CEOs, like Walmart vs Target and such, pre Luigi. And then Luigi happened and he’s like: well yeah.

Really, it all fit with his pre Luigi narrative.

Seeing stuff like this in the uplifting news community instead of shit like ‘local kid spends 60 hours a week selling lemonade to pay for sister’s cancer treatments’ is why I appreciate Lemmy vs Reddit.

Always fun when Bill Burr makes a talk show host visibly uncomfortable. I’m worried they’ll stop having him on altogether, supporting Luigi might be crossing the line. I dunno how Jimmy Kimmel feels about Luigi Mangione, but I know how the people who sign his paychecks feel.

If they can’t get people to hate Luigi, they’ll shift to getting people to forget about him.

I don’t watch Jimmy Kimmel, is he just a bad interviewer? Cuz he sucked. Even the introduction was bad.

He was the guy thay did the Man Show, right? The one that featured chicks on trampolines?

He’s gone downhill

The show that kept Joe Rogan in the public eye between fear factor and his podcast? Yeah, fuck that noise.
I liked his commentary on those squirrel videos.
I dunno who this Joe Rogan is, but it sounds like something you’d put on a bald head to make it grow hair

I dunno what this Joe Rogan is, but it sounds just like Raditz.

FTFY :D

Did you ever see Dogma? Do you remember the Shit Demon? A Joe Rogan is just the nice name we call them.
I think he did it during Fear Factor. He was the second grouping of hosts with Doug Stanhope after Corolla and Kimmel left
