@[email protected] @jerry let me try and draw a thing

@[email protected] @jerry

this is about the way i see it. this is my prediction. Jerry will have real numbers (if he keeps them) in logs/etm for every major wave of new user influx, but this is how i see it from the bleachers every time.

sorry for shit graph. i wish skitch could do drop-of-the-hat graphs

@Viss @screaminggoat It’s probably fatalistic of me to say, but most will go to bsky. I think it will take something happening with bsky for there to be a big surge here. And they won’t stay unless/until we get DMs and discoverability sorted out.

@jerry @[email protected] i have noticed a divergence of .. "flavor"

the people who want to chitchat about nerd stuff, have conversations, post hobbies, art, pics etc - they all come here.

the people who go to bsky are the ones who want a soapbox - a one-way relationship. they want 'an audience' and they would prefer if that audience largely kept their mouths shut. they want fame, the limelight. paradise for narcisists.

they'll go there
we'll scoop up the nerds :D

@Viss @screaminggoat I think you’re right. And that’s ok. We have a community and I can also hang out on bsky if I want to.

I have noticed the maga-adjacent crowd starting to take off their masks here. That is making moderation someone exciting

@jerry @[email protected]

vaporize them all.
i shall live vicariously through you, in launching orbital strikes against the folks who we always knew were probably that flavor but have finally gone mask off.

@Viss
powers up laser mod cannons
@jerry @screaminggoat
@chillybot @jerry @[email protected] i got thrown under the bus for pointing out that derbycon had maga hats on staff, and they were throwing white power symbols. i got dogpiled for pointing out people were making 'nazi cakes' and joking about them. suddenly all those people who screamed at me back then are real quiet

@jerry @Viss @screaminggoat I think, sadly, most people have long succumbed to the implicit concept of "only big corporate things are safe and legitimate."

I know that poisonous lie still echoed in me well into my 30s.

I wouldn't take seriously open source versions of things, believing them "inferior" for no reason whatsoever. There was no real reason why, but it's that very unspoken propaganda that will stop most users from adopting.

They'll go to the corporate thing, by and large.

@NosirrahSec @jerry @[email protected] i have a friend here in town who ABSOLUTELY REFUSES to stop going to starbucks.

i bought her a french press and 100 bucks of the best coffee from mostra, and a grinder.

she doesnt touch it. at all. its in a cupboard gathering dust. she still gets in her car and drives 15 minutes to starbucks.

"because its comfortable. because its repeatable"

and shes too lazy, and cant be fucked to learn how to work a french press.

shes HAPPILY still on facebook.
sigh

@NosirrahSec @jerry @[email protected] its a personality trait. one that everyone who is "me first, fuck everyone else" or "fuck you got mine" tends to have.

they do not give a shit about the greater good. they care about themselves, and what happens to them in the next hour. thats it.

@NosirrahSec @jerry @[email protected] (we uh.. dont really talk much anymore)
