The Proton thing once again teaches us that to put your moral faith in tech organizations of any kind is to beg for betrayal.

But at the same time, if there are no good options, we cannot use those choices to castigate our neighbors.

Use stuff. Don't use stuff. Be good to each other.

@mttaggart Oh, crap. What Proton thing?

@mttaggart @Xavier Yup, regardless Andy and Proton have basically dug in as 'Trump is good for business' which is both a disgusting take and saying that Trump's misogynistic anti-lgbtq cabinet and bigoted plans are okay as long as its pro-business.

If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...

@CommieGIR @Xavier It sucks real bad! But you know what also sucks? Having to move your entire digital life every fifteen minutes because yet another techbro founder turns out to be awful. This isn't the internet we deserve, but it's the one we have, and it just is not possible for everyone to self-host/build from source/do whatever else is maximally ethical in the eyes of the extremists around here. Living your life well and spending less time on tech can have greater moral weight anyhow.

@mttaggart @Xavier I get that but where's the line Taggart? If Andy digs in further and decides 'You know what, because Trump is so good for business, we'll violate the privacy of certain users that Trump deems to be bad"

Because aligning with people like Trump is Red Flag. It doesn't stop there. It never does.

@CommieGIR @Xavier I think there's a distinction between being caught in a service run by an asshole and seeking out services run by assholes, don't you?

@mttaggart @Xavier Time will tell.

But given that Trump and the GOP are heavily anti-privacy, I suspect Andy is in for a rude awakening.

@CommieGIR @mttaggart Also, the reason that Trumpt was anti-big tech last term, is because they tried to fight him. Now they've all turned over. Now big tech can't wait to suck up to him.

Either way, I'll pull my spending with them today.

@Xavier @mttaggart Yup. Cancelling mind. Looking at Mullvad for my VPN needs for biz and region locking stuff.
