The release of USB-A is closer to the moon landing than it is to today and I just got a device that shipped with a USB-A cable
@christianselig I recently bought LED Flashlights from Aldi that don't support C to C Charging because they were to lazy to implement USB-C correctly.
@9eurosyltbesucher @christianselig this is my problem with some of the usbc devices I have.
@Iamgroot11 @9eurosyltbesucher Funnily enough you can trick them if you just use a USB-A cord with a USB-C adapter on the end of it
@9eurosyltbesucher @christianselig you can also use a usb-a that has two usb-c ends and hook up the usbc to usbc together and leave the usb-a unplugged. Stupid work around but it works lol.
@Iamgroot11 @9eurosyltbesucher Wait explain I don't get it
@9eurosyltbesucher @christianselig somehow this method works, I’m explaining on very little sleep. You have a cable that has two usbc ends and a third usb A (male). I purchased heated gloves and it came with a usbA cable with 2 usb C coming out of it. Attaching both usb-c to a device where you’d use a regular usb-c to usb-c will result in it working. The usb-a bridges the usb-c cable somehow. (I don’t know the sorcery behind the it, but it seemed to work.
@christianselig Not that funny, USB-C is just a connector, it's still backwards compatible with original USB protocol, so you can mix ends however you like. It's by design 🙂
@9eurosyltbesucher @christianselig that’s really more like… I don’t know, 70% of usb-c? A nice shape for a power connector, often relying on decades old usb power standards to use modest amounts of energy. USB-C has a double sided plug that is still usb so it’s somehow the wrong way the first (potentially even the second) time, then you can get anything from literally power only , usb2, 3, thunderbolt 4, various levels of support for standards… it’s an improvement, but minimal.
@christianselig always feel tricked/scammed when I buy a device that charges with USB-C, and it does, but specifically requires an A-to-C cable and does not charge with a C-to-C cable. In such cases, really what's the point
@irfan @christianselig This is truly the bane of my existence. How it is even possible??? So annoying.
@tweece @christianselig I've at least 2 devices that this applies to 🙃 To save up the very limited space in my travel case, I removed an A-to-C and A-to-MicroUSB cable and replaced them with a USB-A data/charging cable with magnetic USB-C and MicroUSB connectors. Still, it's really annoying that it's even a thing.
@irfan @christianselig I’ve never heard of this happening.
@dademurphy @christianselig oh it's more common than you think, often, in "cheap" electronics. The most often I've seen them have been on those small emulation gaming handhelds.

Besides these A-to-C
shenanigans, there are also devices that support C-to-C charging but just as annoying in the sense that they're extremely picky with the amount of power they're being supplied (which limits the type of chargers you use). Most common example of this being Raspberry Pis.
@christianselig SMS is even older, and for some reason America won't let go of it.
@dandylyons @christianselig Android users have RCS and iOS users have iMessage, so I’m not sure WTF you’re talking about.
@christianselig I absolutely do not like that bit of trivia, doesn’t fit into my French vanilla delusion of my actual age

@christianselig

Damn it, it the USA space program was run with the clarity of the USB-IF we'd have... modern day NASA.

@christianselig was it used for the moon landing? 😂
@christianselig Dude, I never understood why the EU and techies were so happy about the USB C on iPhone thing. We've already been usb C everything in the Apple ECO system in regards to what is plugged into the brick/charger/etc. Meanwhile, a plethora of companies are pushing out NEW products enabling people who have usb A to keep them even longer.
@richaesthetic @christianselig yeah but you are stuck when on the road and your USB-C to lightning cable is at home and all your friends only have USB-C to USB-C charging cables

@maxbob You are also stuck on the road say your friend has the cable but its A to USB C and you have a usb C brick…

Anyways, I'm not saying its not nice to have USB C iPhone (I film with iPhone and an SSD now), however its not the great achievement all the “haha Apple, the EU got you” people made it out to be. Especially when Apple already made the iPhones with USB C. You don't seriously think they changed it that late into the iPhone 16's production. lmfao.

@christianselig I hope you left a zero-star review for that product. The whole plug thing needs to be wiped clean now - everything should be USB-C (until they come up with USB-D which has light-speed transfer (no, not lightening-speed transfer). SMH, I have so many dongles and adapter bits laying around...this is stupid.
@christianselig Moon landing?? If you’re bringing back Apollo blink twice…
@christianselig Where's the EU when you need them??
@christianselig Now do the internal combustion engine.
@christianselig I actually had to calculate it myself and indeed that's true 😬 I still remember reading (as a kid) about USB specification and functionality in 1997 computer magazine... I was quite impressed.
@christianselig Just got one too. Wife said don’t we need that cable as I threw it away? No we don’t 🙁
