Last day to put in submissions on proposed Regulatory Standards Bill, closing at 11.59pm on 13 Jan, i.e. tonight! Best to email them.

My submission answers Qs, opposes the RS Bill, and refers to good Legislation Design. I mention the Open Government NZ programme and that RS proposal is inadequate to fix any issues.

Please let me know if document doesn't open for you. Please don't copy and paste. Use any ideas in your own words.

@Kay great work, thank you for sharing! This bit is so important: "Too many laws have secrecy clauses and deny civil society and journalism oversight through Official Information releases or disclosures." I wish I'd thought to include that in mine, thank you for putting it in yours 💜
@v_for_verbosity I'd read articles on NewsroomNZ and submissions by @civillibertynz on topic of Secrecy Clauses in NZ legislation. I should have included more links like these in my #RegulationStandards submission!

Government’s ‘abject failure’ on secrecy clauses

Government agencies are giving themselves a 'get out of jail free card' on Official Information Act requirements, observers say – and new guidelines appear unlikely to make a meaningful difference.

Newsroom
@Kay just read @civillibertynz on the RSB proposal. Outstanding!

I particularly enjoyed these bits of the conclusion:
"...seeking to protect the ‘liberties’ of companies, it will result in poor quality law making that undermines people’s rights in order to benefit the wealthy... the proposed Regulatory Standards Board is a glaring nexus for corruption and lobbying by vested interests. The proposals are fundamentally undemocratic and should not be taken any further." 🔥

The government is proposing to introduce a Regulatory Standards Bill, which would define principles of liberty and property against which all other legislation would be tested. The Council is opposed to the proposals, and believes they seek to make the 'liberties' and property rights of co

@v_for_verbosity @civillibertynz I also particularly agreed with snark about Grenfell Towers, tobacco advertising, and mining!
