I learned they can put themselves into suspended animation where most of their bodily functions stop. They also produce a natural antifreeze that protects them in low temperatures.

(I also wondered about the broad, flat bramble leaves while out walking the dog - covered in ice, but still green and presumably alive, ready for the spring...)

@coprolite9000 When I used to ramble in the winter woods back east, it was not uncommon to see green plants under snow and even ice. Turns out that plants can also produce a protective antifreeze. 🌞
