Also, it is incredibly buggy. My phone routinely is getting super sluggish and hot as it does a spindump or whatever from some Photos-related process crashing after doing an edit or just browsing around. Like with the video I just posted, where I repeatedly ran into this…
I don’t know of any iOS update more hated by normal people than the iOS 18 Photos app redesign.
While the problems with the new Photos app are many, here are some things I do like:
• The ability to customise the order and display of the sections
• Groups in the People collection, which can show all photos that contain specific people
• The new search is a significant improvement and the suggestions it offers for the types of searches that can be performed are useful (one downside: it can no longer search for x-rays?)
• They’re iterating on it in the point releases
Another somewhat curious design choice in the new Photos app:
If you want to disable all of the constantly playing videos and cross-fading/zooming slideshows that appear throughout the app’s main summary views, there’s an option, “Auto-Play Motion”, that you can turn off.
But this also results in videos that you specifically tap on not playing by default, so you then have to tap play every single time you view a video.
I feel like that should be a separate option.
