How are you?

@KatyElphinstone my usual answers:

"Hanging in there."
"As well as can be expected."
"Not bad for a Monday."
"Every day's an adventure!"

@KatyElphinstone
My usual response is "Ich bastel' mich durch", which roughly translates to "still making progress somehow" - though it works a bit better in German.

@DL1JPH

I like the Italian response, "si tira avanti"... roughly translating to "one drags oneself onwards"
😊

@KatyElphinstone
It's one of those expressions that are almost impossible to translate - a colloquialism relying on an idiom. The literal translation would be something like "I'm tinkering with ways to get through", which doesn't exactly roll off the tongue...

@DL1JPH

Ahh yes I know this in German, now you mention it...
Basteln like doodling 🙂

@DL1JPH

I'm doodling my way through... Hm.

@KatyElphinstone
Doodling would be closer to "kritzeln" or "malen" - "basteln" refers to handicraft or tinkering. Especially when used in the latter sense, it strongly implies "don't necessarily know what I'm doing"

@DL1JPH

Yes... that's so true (wracking brains & imagining their Oma playing with my kids)...basteln is actually more like gluing & making, crafting...yes. Sorry about that!

@DL1JPH

Tinkering. I see.
That's good to know....
Hm I don't know where I got doodling from!!

@KatyElphinstone
I'd guess because both are commonly referred to together in regards to children's activities - "malen und basteln" is one of the more common phrases used in this context.

For adults, "basteln" is often used in the context or trying to build/fix something when they clearly don't know how to and likely trying it with the wrong (or very cheap) tools. Success is optional.

@DL1JPH

I like "success is optional" 😊

@KatyElphinstone
That's what I meant when I said that little phrase is almost impossible to translate... There's a lot of implied but commonly understood meaning there, which is virtually guaranteed to get lost in translation.
@KatyElphinstone
One of the northern german answers would be "I have to", or short "Muss".

@KatyElphinstone

At work I would reply:

Vertical and employed.

@KatyElphinstone my responses are often one of:

Coping
Tired
Alright enough

@KatyElphinstone If you ask me that question you're likely to get an honest answer.
@BernieDoesIt and then people don't know how to deal with it, tss. @KatyElphinstone
@KatyElphinstone I tend to be more of a "pick yourself up, dust yourself down and do it all over again" until you succeed person. Maybe it`s because I spend my time doing that that I am not very "successful" 😀
