BRUTALLY HONEST REMINDER:

While I enjoy social media, I'm really here to sell stuff to you.

What kind of stuff? Books.

How often? More than once a year, less than once a month.

The rest of the time I'm just chatting or babbling, but don't be fooled: this is a marketing account.

If you want me to sell something to my audience for you, and it's anything other than SF/F books, I cordially invite you to fuck off into the sun. I'm not that kind of influencer.

@cstross you're the sort of influencer we need

@coldclimate You're welcome!

I hate being marketed at, and I hate insecurity advertising even more, so this is just my attempt at truth in advertising.

Oh, and my next novel comes out next Tuesday: it's "A Conventional Boy" and it's only on hardcover and ebook for now.

@cstross tremendous news. Any DRM free options?
@coldclimate If you're in the US/Canada, Tor.com, the publisher, does not apply DRM. If you're in the EU, Orbit (the UK publisher) is part of Hachette who require DRM on *everything*. In which case I suggest you investigate DRMTools on Github. (I can't link to it for contractual reasons.)
@cstross I appreciate your dedication to sensibleness
@cstross also, what's the best way for me to buy so that you make the most money?

@coldclimate I have no idea!

(Short answer, though, is "buy the most expensive edition from the smallest retailer—ideally an independent specialist SF/F bookstore".)

@cstross @coldclimate
Pre-ordered before the cover art was even published.
(Nice to have that option)
Looking forward to it.
@cstross Just went to order the new book. Oh look, I already preordered it back in November…
@coldclimate
@cstross wait you're here to sell me more scifi books. You threaten us with such a good time...
@quixoticgeek @cstross Yes, completely agree! We hate having a good time! 🥳

@cstross can't complain about this, clear, upfront and to the point.

Hope you sell huge piles of books :)

@cstross @Gorfram It's the inclusion of the term "cordially" that highlights the intellect of the aggression. It says, I am not angry now, and I needn't become so, but should you contrive to fuck with me, I will end you.

@cstross Brutally honest reciprocation: we're here, engaging, to encourage you to write the next book, and your publisher to pay you to do it.

The babbling and cat pics are a delightful bonus!

@cstross Thank you for Singularity Sky, which I read in 2024. Looking forward to reading A Conventional Boy soon.
@HollieK72 You're welcome! I began writing SS in ... 1996? Or was it 1997? It's flawed but if it's still entertaining people I guess I did something right.
@cstross I think my husband mentioned The Atrocity Archives at some point in the past, and I went on to read the whole series, the New Management, the Merchant Princes, and quite a few other books. Apparently it works for me!
@cstross You've been on my "must buy" list for well over a decade, quite possibly two. But I'm not going to complain about microwritings to tide me over between actual novels.
@cstross that’s okay the books are good. I blame Tor and their freebies such as Down On The Farm for knocking me off the wagon when i let burnout eat my joy of reading.
@cstross Well it’s worked on me, happily chugging through the Laundry files…

@cstross

But I thought we were friends! You liked my comments... 😿

@Charlie Stross do you have any influence on the decisions about drm for your books?
@cstross Works. Mentioning "Halting state" and "Rule 34" in a later skeet sold 2 books. Hadn't heard of them before.

@cstross

Please keep on babbling--it's immensely fun!

As to buying books, I'm a secondary effect on your income as my reading is from the library nowadays.
