I decided to upgrade to a Roku Voice Remote Pro, because it's the model with an internal battery and USB-C charging. I thought this made sense because I'm always using the headphone option on my remote, but it kills the batteries real fast, and swapping rechargables from the remote to the charger is a pain.

turns out I got sent the Roku Voice Remote Prop (2nd edition), which is exactly like the original except THEY DROPPED THE HEADPHONE PORT

that was literally the only reason I bought the stupid thing. what the fuck?
Here's the Roku Voice Remote Pro
And then the Roku Voice Remote Pro (2nd edition)
FINE. they want to play dirty? let's play dirty. I'm gonna make a roku remote that's batteryless and thus never needs charging
and I'm gonna plug my 3.5mm headphones into it and leave them plugged in.
I could just upgrade my TV with a soundbar that supports bluetooth but then I need to manage the batteries in my headphones.
I went and checked to see if they did the thing where you can use an adapter to get audio out of the USB-C.
Nope, they just tell you to use the mobile app
the roku mobile app is the single shittiest part of the roku ecosystem and that is saying a fucking lot
@foone oh just in case you were worried that this would stay the same, they recently patented a way for their TVs to insert ads into HDMI-connected devices!

@dean @foone

God, they are _so_ on the enshittification* fast track.

* as originally described as specifically the inevitable decline of two-sided platforms. Not merely "everything gets worse".

@foone oh god, I *hate* the roku mobile app, that in its self is a chunk of why I moved away from roku lol
@foone I’ve used BrightScript, the language Roku apps are written in and that eco system isn’t fun either to work with
@foone If you have an iOS device or a Mac, Roam is a 3rd party remote app which supports the private listening feature, not sure if there's an equivalent on Android: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/roam-a-better-remote-for-roku/id6469834197
‎Roam: A Better Remote for Roku

‎Roam is a free app with no ads! - Runs on Mac, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, VisionOS and (soon) Apple TV! - Smart platform integration with keyboard shortcuts on Mac and keyboard/volume control on iOS - Use shortcuts, widgets or Siri to control your TV without ever opening the app! - Private listenin…

@foone https://github.com/wseemann/RoMote seems to be an Android moral equivalent although I haven't used this one myself

Meanwhile, I'm pretty sure Jellyfin is one of the best. Funny how stable and fast it is compared to all the for-profit streaming services on their ecosystem...
@chocobo13 jellyfin is one of the main things I use my roku for
@foone This sounds like a job for an excessively long cable and maybe some dongles.
@foone I just decided to buy a headphone amp/DAC that has optical in. Because I'm the kind of fool that doesn't mind running a headphone cord across the room, lol
@foone hard wire a USB cable into the power wires internally so you have to plug it into a power brick to use it
Just use a really long USB cable
