Thank you for this day. ๐ŸŒ‡

โ€œIn May 1894, the bronze lions took their place on pedestals in front of the museum. Sculpted in active poses, the lion on the north pedestal is โ€˜on the prowl.โ€™ The other, โ€˜in an attitude of defianceโ€™ on the south pedestal was, according to the artist, โ€˜the most difficult I have ever attempted.โ€™โ€

The Lions of Michigan Avenue | The Art Institute of Chicago

With our beloved lions being conserved off-site, we're brought back this 2018 article about their creation and creator, Edward Kemeys. Expect to see both lions back home and looking as handsome as ever by the end of July.

@mckra1g ๐Ÿค” so, did he have to get the lion/model angry, to get that pose? ๐Ÿ˜ฒ yikes! ๐Ÿ˜‚

@mckra1g The lions had sentimental value to my parents, from when we lived near Chicago. Mom loved the Art Institute, and Dad's employer's Chicago office gave one on (I think) his tenth anniversary. Mom treasured that little lion statue, and it was a centerpiece of our mantelpiece decor. We had moved away by his twentieth, so did not get the matching lion that Mom looked forward to.

It's always a delight to see a picture of the lions pop up unexpectedly. Thank you.
