I think I found a scanned version of the book I was thinking about.

It's from @internetarchive and it was written in 1979,the year of my birth.

I was in front of a TRS-80 with this book and not really knowing what I was supposed to do with it at about 5 or 6 years old.

My favorite BASIC book from way-back-when is "The Atari BASIC Source Book," written by the developers themselves.

Lots of insight into their thinking. Remarkable how much they accomplished with mere kilobytes of RAM. Fun read.
