Australian folks love any advice–moving to a new place, NBN internet or 5G internet?
@johnallsopp is the property already provisioned (I assume so)? FTTC or FTTP? If it's already there, I'd definitely say go wired.
@trib thanks! There appears to be a box there, will have to check vintage etc
@trib hmm Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) (had a good experience last place around 5 years ago with that so…)
@johnallsopp I’d have thought HFC would have been updated. Interesting. Still, should be okay. Maybe @jpm or @NewtonMark can comment with far greater expertise?

@trib @johnallsopp @NewtonMark I haven’t been subjected to HFC since 2017 when I moved to a place with FTTP.

Generally, it will come down to usage - will you use more data than a mobile connection will allow at the price point? Both connection types have issues with shared bandwidth, and anecdotally HFC connections have more outages than mobile.

@jpm @trib @johnallsopp @NewtonMark my HFC NBN has been mostly good for the past few years. Aussie BB.
@franksting @jpm @trib @NewtonMark I had aussie, but FTTP from memory a few years back-rock solid and great up/down (we live streamed our 2020 online conferences over it from Chippendale to the world! In hindsight braver than I realised!)
@trib @johnallsopp HFC is the ticking time bomb of the NBN. If you actively wanted to design a system to have multiple points of failure and no accountability, you'd create HFC.
@200ok @trib so that's on for 5G then 🙂

@johnallsopp @trib 5G has the same problems as mobile coverage, and will have more latency than wired. So ... you might still have to hold your breath and go with NBN.

Where we are now we can get non-NBN fibre and although the customer service sucks, the connection is great.

@200ok @trib I have non NBN fibre in the place I'm vacating–way too many outages for my liking, no alternative to the provider that does the whole complex…
@johnallsopp Yeah the non-NBN options have a real "early cable tv" vibe to them. Getting whole apartment blocks locked in.
@200ok @johnallsopp almost glad to be on very stable, fast Starlink out here in the bush. Even if it further enables Musk.
@trib @200ok yeah, and I had a Tesla earmarked for my next car until about 3 years ago 😞
@200ok yeah gotta say that plus the same for gas +electricity really did not sit well wth me in this place.
