I should probably be very clear that I see a big difference between faith and religion; and I am not saying they are right or wrong even if they are frequently in tension with each other.
Some people have faith, some have religion, some have both, some have neither. It is important to be aware of which one you're dealing with.
You cannot expect them to change what is real to them, but you do want to be ready for the ones who expect you to change what is real to you.

Conservative Christians™️ fundamentally ignore the actual scripture they claim to follow. They use a disingenuous selective reading when they do bother to "quote" from it. They generally live exceptionally uncharitable lives, hiding behind a veneer of decency provided by attendance at church and a falsely cheery demeanour ("smiling arsehole"). Any charity they do provide is ice cold, with strings attached.
