Sydney braces for heatwave amid warning hospitals may struggle as hot weather hits New South Wales

Richmond and Penrith west of Sydney are expected to reach highs of 42 degrees Celsius today, and 40C in Campbelltown.

ABC News

@ai6yr And the usual method of parking lots tents for emergencies will most likely not work for this type of scenario.

I read an article a while back and it rings true. Our infrastructure is not geared towards extreme heat. It never has been. Transformers, power ines sagging, asphalt becoming too soft etc will only exacerbate these events.

Add to that the collective resilience of the general populating is basically zero. People become unglued when they lose thier ISP for a few hours let along an event like this

I mean honestly how many of your neighbors have even 72 hours of supplies in the event of a disaster, climate or otherwise?

@cvvhrn Well, I mean, Australia is always trying to kill you, so I hope they are slightly better prepared. But, the death tolls for a blackout during a heatwave in Phoenix are astronomical. 13K deaths? We'll see if/when that scenario happens. https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/local/arizona-environment/2023/05/25/phoenix-is-not-prepared-for-a-simultaneous-heat-wave-and-blackout/70252691007/
Phoenix is not prepared for a simultaneous heat wave and blackout, new research shows

Phoenix would likely suffer more than other big cities, because extreme heat here is more extreme and because more people rely on air conditioning.

The Arizona Republic

@ai6yr @cvvhrn
maybe volunteer agencies should start advertising that their volunteers usually have access to air conditioning.

Help the Red Cross staff a shelter and have access to heat/air and basic food stuffs!!

It's tough to get volunteers these days.

@ai6yr We already have that model too France where there is not a ton of AC. And lets face it summers in Phoenix are way way different than Paris https://www.lemonde.fr/en/france/article/2024/02/08/france-recorded-over-5-000-deaths-due-to-summer-2023-heat_6505713_7.html
France recorded over 5,000 deaths due to summer 2023 heat

Around 3,700 of the deaths were people aged over 75. Extreme heat has been straining healthcare systems, hitting older people, infants and children.

Le Monde

@cvvhrn @ai6yr

In the Blizzard in Buffalo that killed so many people several\who died had ventured out of their homes to buy things they needed (diapers, baby formula, food). In the aftermath there were a lot of recommendations to stock up, but also push back because many don't have the money to keep a weeks worth of food on hand for their whole family. (Or not the kind of food they want.)

And you're right that many people lack the skills/mindset to deal with existential threats.

@VirginiaHolloway @cvvhrn @ai6yr

after moving to this teeny tiny apartment I struggle finding places to store my disaster supplies.

@MsMerope @VirginiaHolloway @ai6yr

Yeah space can be a problem. But an 72 hour or INCH bag can be fitted into a trunk.

I am a bit over the top but I have one of these for each family member plus 72 hour kits in each car kitted out the same.

My only regret is I should have gone for used backpack that function great but look bad. Nothing draws attention like shiny new tacticool gear lol

@cvvhrn @MsMerope @VirginiaHolloway Is that a machete? LOL

@ai6yr @MsMerope @VirginiaHolloway Yes. Highly effective general purpose knife and aside from a firearm is a nice keep away tool

That is my sons bag pictured I actually have a KA-BAR Becker Kukri on mine

The Kukri was spendy but a good made int he US Machete can be had for $40-50

@cvvhrn @MsMerope @VirginiaHolloway There's something to not calling attention to yourself in that kind of situation, for sure.

@cvvhrn @VirginiaHolloway @ai6yr

I bought a big roller bag and it's shoved under the bed with the fire evacuation ladder, the jackery, christmas decorations, halloween decorations, extra blankets, extra sheets, and about 10 boxes of teaching supplies.

Hopefully I don't grab the bin of lego and the box of puzzles instead of the disaster supplies!

Then again deployments are usually a lot of "hurry up and wait" the lego bin might come in handy. 🤷‍♀️

@MsMerope @VirginiaHolloway @ai6yr

Actually I had to chuckle but when My son was younger we had a small lego set in our bag for this type of situation to keep him occupied

@cvvhrn @VirginiaHolloway @ai6yr

I have a first aid kit in the car and extra water but that's about it .

If I'm leaving town I'm usually going on a day hike so I have a back pack with me.

@MsMerope @VirginiaHolloway @ai6yr

It is easy to bulk it up and a lot of it can be found at thrift centers. Most of it is camping gear in reality.

They only place not to scrimp is a water filter. Lack of water will kill you faster than anything else

@cvvhrn @VirginiaHolloway @ai6yr
I have at least 2 life straws somewhere

at home i've got a ton of water, broth, almond milk, etc...

It's tough to keep food in the car cuz lol Sacramento summers. Once we had a red flag warning on a work day so I threw my 5.11 boots in the car [with the windows cracked] and the glue holding part of the boots together melted. 🥾

@MsMerope @VirginiaHolloway @ai6yr Yikes!!! Yeah for sure heat is an issue.

I carry multiple life straws then only issue is that they clog fast if the water is not clear

Keep an eye on Costco. THey will carry life straws from time to time and great prices. But its costco so its like a package of 4 lol

@MsMerope @VirginiaHolloway @cvvhrn @ai6yr A possible answer to lack of space (or access to equipment, or other problems): #MutualAid

@VirginiaHolloway @ai6yr

You kind of hit the nail there. What they don't want to eat. We round out our emergency supplies with MRE entrees

Why? They are wet packed which means you don't need potable water, can be eaten cold, have crazy shelf life and if you buy in bulk they are reasonably priced. We buy in 4 lots and rotate them out. Our local food bank takes them.

They are not very appealing as we have tried them. But if thats what you have then thats what you have and an emergency is hardly the time to get picky lol

@cvvhrn @ai6yr

I'm sure they make sense, but the corner stores (and even big grocery stores) doesn't sell MREs and while I'm sure they're easy to find online but if they're not on your mind you're never going to search them out.

I also believe that a significant portion of the population has really rudimentary skills as far as feeding themself at the best of times. Cereal, junk food, frozen food, take out.

Urban populations aren't used to thinking of nature as a threat.

@VirginiaHolloway @ai6yr That is true I live in the suburbs and my comments are really directed there.

I have relatives who are farmers in Oklahoma. They will be fine as its really baked into thier skill set

@VirginiaHolloway @cvvhrn @ai6yr
cans of beans, packets of tuna and crackers, peanut butter, etc. are grocery store items that are shelf stable for a long time and don’t have to be heated. Fun? Not really, but ok.

Backpacking meals and instant oatmeal are more familiar than MREs and easy to keep on hand but you’ll need a way to purify/heat water if you’re stranded a while without power. For me, that’s camping gear I already have or the grill.
