@ai6yr And the usual method of parking lots tents for emergencies will most likely not work for this type of scenario.
I read an article a while back and it rings true. Our infrastructure is not geared towards extreme heat. It never has been. Transformers, power ines sagging, asphalt becoming too soft etc will only exacerbate these events.
Add to that the collective resilience of the general populating is basically zero. People become unglued when they lose thier ISP for a few hours let along an event like this
I mean honestly how many of your neighbors have even 72 hours of supplies in the event of a disaster, climate or otherwise?
In the Blizzard in Buffalo that killed so many people several\who died had ventured out of their homes to buy things they needed (diapers, baby formula, food). In the aftermath there were a lot of recommendations to stock up, but also push back because many don't have the money to keep a weeks worth of food on hand for their whole family. (Or not the kind of food they want.)
And you're right that many people lack the skills/mindset to deal with existential threats.
@VirginiaHolloway @cvvhrn @ai6yr
after moving to this teeny tiny apartment I struggle finding places to store my disaster supplies.
@MsMerope @VirginiaHolloway @ai6yr
Yeah space can be a problem. But an 72 hour or INCH bag can be fitted into a trunk.
I am a bit over the top but I have one of these for each family member plus 72 hour kits in each car kitted out the same.
My only regret is I should have gone for used backpack that function great but look bad. Nothing draws attention like shiny new tacticool gear lol
@cvvhrn @VirginiaHolloway @ai6yr
I have a first aid kit in the car and extra water but that's about it .
If I'm leaving town I'm usually going on a day hike so I have a back pack with me.
@MsMerope @VirginiaHolloway @ai6yr
It is easy to bulk it up and a lot of it can be found at thrift centers. Most of it is camping gear in reality.
They only place not to scrimp is a water filter. Lack of water will kill you faster than anything else
@cvvhrn @VirginiaHolloway @ai6yr
I have at least 2 life straws somewhere
at home i've got a ton of water, broth, almond milk, etc...
It's tough to keep food in the car cuz lol Sacramento summers. Once we had a red flag warning on a work day so I threw my 5.11 boots in the car [with the windows cracked] and the glue holding part of the boots together melted. 🥾
@MsMerope @VirginiaHolloway @ai6yr Yikes!!! Yeah for sure heat is an issue.
I carry multiple life straws then only issue is that they clog fast if the water is not clear
Keep an eye on Costco. THey will carry life straws from time to time and great prices. But its costco so its like a package of 4 lol
