@estherschindler How exactly is installing #NVIDIA drivers on #Linux related to depression?

I'm late to the game, I admit (with roughly 3 decades Linux experience, I've managed to get my first laptop with an NVIDIA GPU that I care about), but on Fedora 40 it was like searching on how to do it, and installing one package, and let the distribution handle it.

Re-enabling Safeboot was slightly more exciting, but even there the excitement was watching the signing key being added to the UEFI BIOS.

@yacc143 @estherschindler Same, I have no idea why these memes keep coming up, especially now that it's easier than ever.

Even hybrid graphics and CUDA usually just work, I'm using both on a 10 year old gaming laptop and a brand new mobile workstation with an RTX 2000 Ada Generation card.

@estherschindler Gosh, the last time I had to get Nvidia drivers to work on Linux I had to install bvi and do direct editing on some binary files. Easy-peasy!
@estherschindler
i have problems with nvidia drivers in linux at the moment. imanage to get them work.
@estherschindler Wait is this the same Linux that Linux people always say is super easy now and should be everyone's OS of choice?
@estherschindler
Manjaro users: I don't get it

@estherschindler

To do this I had to type "driver" in my start menu, then click a check box and hit apply.

@estherschindler I just ignore installing any drivers. Graphics in Debian seems to be working anyway. Maybe not as good but I rather have that than installing drivers any day
@estherschindler @juliancday as someone who has been reduced to tears trying to understand Kubernetes, which is totally different I know, I could only imagine
@estherschindler I thought he had to set up Bluetooth, on anything????

@estherschindler

as ever, “it depends”… 🤔

on some distros this seems to mostly be a solved problem (#YMMV, obvs. 🙃)

my (only) Linux joke is that the Year of Linux on the Desktop is 2038^

^ 32-bit versions only 🤪

@estherschindler super accurate for my GeForce 9500 cuda and pytorch installation on debian 12
