Well, I'm not crazy about MEGA cruise ships, I do agree that we when we do travel, we should slow down and enjoy the journey.

Could the #airship be the answer to #sustainable #AirTravel – or is it all a load of hot air?

by Laura Hall, December 12, 2024

"Though an airship, which typically flies at around 100-130km/h, won't ever reach the speeds of a jet plane, they are being talked about as forms of slow travel like cruise ships and night trains, where the experience makes up for the speed.

"Airships fly at a lower altitude than a plane, with unpressurised cabins where you can open and look out of the window, making it more comfortable for passengers. The large balloon also takes far less energy to power – and potentially could operate with electric engines powering liftoff and steering, making them a zero-carbon emitting form of air transport. "

Amid talk of sustainable aviation fuel and electric flights, there's another form of air travel currently being mooted as a green alternative to flying: the airship.

In one of his early books Cory Doctorow forecast that we would be using airships in the future. Sorry, I can't recall the title of that one.

@StephenRees I know that Steampunk was huge at the Goth club years ago. I still love the song Airship Pirates by the band #AbneyPark. That used to fill the dance floor.

Some of the young whippersnapper antifascists I organise with recently came across the existence of steampunk, and made fun of it so hard I had to pretend that I don't still have any cog-studded waistcoats at the back of my closet.

Fuck the back of the closet.

We gotta rock that shit.

Seen Abney Park live like four times, I love this stuff so much!

Nice! I've only seen them once. @violetmadder @passenger @StephenRees

I've seen them three times. Each time they had a different lineup. The first time they were supported by Professor Elemental, the second time by The Men Who Will Not Be Blamed For Nothing, and the third time by a bunch of local bands, including one that had two of the former members of Clockwork Quartet.

Please don't tell anyone. I have a reputation as an elder metaller to protect.

I never got to see Vernian Process live, which I feel sad about. Their music was a lot more goth-industrial than the folk-rock that Abney Park or Clockwork Dolls did, and is more my thing.

In retrospect I'm glad I never saw Doctor Steel, given what came out about him.

I totally agree about Vernian Process. And I did not hear about Doctor Steel, but he gave off a weird vibe. @passenger

Had tea once with Professor Elemental, it was grand!
