I generally try to avoid old TV shows being streamed if they're not presented ad free, but this is not always possible. It does demonstrate at least some care when the ads are inserted in the PROPER places as they would have been during the original airings, rather than just randomly interrupting the shows in the middle of scenes as some services do. The latter should be criminal.

Agreed re: the automated slice-n-dice insertion of commercials into programs at arbitrary points. Directors were (maybe still are?) pretty careful about making sure the commercial breaks were timed to narrative breakpoints (well, the reverse, really).

I normally detest 90+% of ads. But I might not actually mind watching them in old shows like this if the commercials were made in a period-appropriate style for the show. Probably an idle fantasy; brands aren't going to make more different ads just for particular ad slots.

@cazabon Sometimes when I watch really old cheesy "bad" good scif-fi or sword and sandal streamed films I'll admit that I probably wouldn't mind too much if a few old Cal Worthington commercials were spliced in at the appropriate junctures. You may not know who Cal Worthington is offhand. The creativity of his spots (and his various "dog" spots) made his commercials actually entertaining especially as they evolved.

Fun Fact: Once he came out and showed a Playboy Bunny as "his dog spot". Hilarious at the time. Probably wouldn't play well now.

@lauren

I wasn't familiar with the name, but reading up on him, I'm sure I've seen some clips from the "dog" spots, as they rang a bell. "Riding a hippopotamus" I don't remember, but that's pretty brave...

I must have seen them in a documentary on advertising or similar.

If you're interested in the business and creative sides of advertising, there's a Canadian industry figure who has done (and still does) a series of radio programs exclusively about advertising. I'm not sure how well they're known outside of Canada. The current show is "Under the Influence" which is more about marketing generally, but it was preceded by advertising-specific "The Age of Persuasion" and "O'Reilly on Advertising". They're interesting, funny, and totally worth the time.

Under the Influence podcast is available various ways, including Apple/Spotify/etc, or online:

The 51st state of the USA, I hear.

@cazabon We'll have to stuff that extra star in there somewhere.
