I wasn't familiar with the name, but reading up on him, I'm sure I've seen some clips from the "dog" spots, as they rang a bell. "Riding a hippopotamus" I don't remember, but that's pretty brave...

If you're interested in the business and creative sides of advertising, there's a Canadian industry figure who has done (and still does) a series of radio programs exclusively about advertising. I'm not sure how well they're known outside of Canada. The current show is "Under the Influence" which is more about marketing generally, but it was preceded by advertising-specific "The Age of Persuasion" and "O'Reilly on Advertising". They're interesting, funny, and totally worth the time.
