🧵 Our annual NOAA Arctic Report Card is available today for 2024. It discusses recent changes in the #Arctic, extreme events, and broader human/environmental impacts.

I am happy to have played another role in this year's report - see our chapter on Arctic sea surface temperatures: https://arctic.noaa.gov/report-card/report-card-2024/sea-surface-temperature-2024/.

Using data from NOAA OISSTv2.1, we document the latest trends & variability in summertime ocean temperatures (a particular focus on regional anomalies).

Be sure to check out the fantastic collection of visuals by NOAA Climate[dot]gov, which clearly highlight changes in the vital signs of Arctic climate system: https://www.climate.gov/news-features/understanding-climate/2024-arctic-report-card-documents-rapid-dramatic-change
2024 Arctic Report Card documents rapid, dramatic change

Among the changes, the Arctic tundra is now releasing more carbon dioxide to the atmosphere than it stores.

Some of the major headlines from today include:

"The transition of the Arctic from a carbon sink to a carbon source is one of the dramatic changes in the Arctic that are documented in NOAA’s 2024 Arctic Report Card."

2024 Arctic Report Card tracks rapid, complex Arctic change

There are a wide-range of important articles this year including topics such as changes in migratory tundra caribou (https://arctic.noaa.gov/report-card/report-card-2024/migratory-tundra-caribou-in-a-warmer-climate/) to a historical framing essay titled: "The Original Researchers: Hunters are Scientists Deserving Sustained Support" (https://arctic.noaa.gov/report-card/report-card-2024/the-original-researchers-hunters-are-scientists-deserving-sustained-support/)

Finally, note that all of the Arctic Report Card data is described in an open source portal: https://arcticdata.io/catalog/portals/reportcard

The Arctic Report Card has been issued annually since 2006: https://arctic.noaa.gov/report-card/report-card-archive/ Next year we will celebrate the 20th anniversary!

@ZLabe
Was this situation (inversion of the carbon sink) foreseen in the IPCC simulations?
@ZLabe 😱“Our observations now show that the Arctic tundra, which is experiencing warming and increased wildfire, is now emitting more carbon than it stores, which will worsen climate change impacts. This is yet one more sign, predicted by scientists, of the consequences of inadequately reducing fossil fuel pollution.” #ClimateChange
