some questions:

  • What was the judging criteria?
  • How is Jami so much more secure than Signal?
  • Shouldn't Telegram be the worst of these, as it doesn't even have end-to-end encryption by default?
  • FB Messenger has e2e encryption. dunno if that makes it better than Telegram still, lol

@frankie 1. Gut feeling. 2. Jami doesn't even have a server, it is literally peer-to-peer. 3 - 4.Telegram is not by Facebook and it has some security.

Being a Meta product per se doesn't affect the security aspect. The kind of encryption makes the actual difference.

Telegram doesn't have e2e encryption by default. You need to start a separate secret chat to facilitate the same. Moreover, it's not available for group chats. It encrypts calls, though.

FB messenger has e2ee in personal, group chats, and calls enabled by default.

In the tracking (metadata) aspect, yes, Meta is worse.

Suggestion: Include Session messenger also. It's got better anonymity and privacy.

@frankie I'm less inclined to believe that e2ee makes any difference with Meta's apps. There were talks about Australian government some years ago asking WhatsApp to implement a silent user, with full encryption keys into e2ee chats of people, and make so the UI of the program will not show them be present. So technically it is encrypted, but there is no difference.

    there were talks....

then it's likely possible for telegram also.
well, until proven, it's hearsay. there was similar news regarding whatsapp and signal and every other chat app.

@frankie @blenderdumbass The OP seems to have confused security with privacy.
Telegram is bad, do not use.
